A Little About Me

Hello, and welcome to my world where posts are full of book reviews, stories from my travels, my never-ending obsession with four-inch heels, my opinions on life and love, my thoughts on the questions of the universe, and a running commentary on any interesting bits I come across, and, of course, the things that drive me nuts. And perhaps a bit of literary drivel thrown in for good measure.

“heidikins” is my childhood nickname and means “little heidi” in German. I am not German, not really – about 1/16th or 1/32nd or something, but my mom, my two sisters and I have proper German names.  Go figure.  I love when people use “heidikins” as a term of endearment, and I always spell it without a capital ‘H’ at the beginning.

We probably have never met or even been properly introduced; so, here is a little bit of this ‘n’ that starring your new favorite blogger, me. I’m sure you are fascinated by all this, but don’t worry – if you don’t make it through the whole list we can still be friends. Albeit, friends that don’t read other friend’s lists (ahem, not that I’m dropping any hints or anything… I’m just saying).

  • I am in my late twenties and live in Salt Lake City. Not the suburbs, but in the city, I love living downtown.
  • I have been working towards an Economics degree for far longer than I really care to admit, but I think I am finally on the home-stretch.  My minor will be in Mandarin Chinese, and no, I’m not sure what I’ll do with either of those when I grow up, but I’m guaranteeing that a trip to the Great Wall of China is in there somewhere.
  • I love to read and can usually be found with a my nose in a book, or with a new paperback in my purse. I can’t help it, I’m a woman obsessed!
  • I also love road trips; short ones, long ones, a couple of states, a dozen states…I love them all.
  • Combining a road trip with books and you get perfection.  Every February I drive to Phoenix for the Best Booksale Ever! Seriously, you should check it out; read all about my trip here and here. And here and here (2010).
  • I drive a yellow VW bettle named Miss Daisy Mae. She is my baby and I adore her. Favorite response upon learning what car I drive: “Of course you do.” That’s a compliment, right? I got in a pretty bad car accident in April 2008 and Miss Daisy got totalled.  I now drive a red VW beetle named Red Roxy; she’s sassy, she’s punky, she goes really really fast.
  • I have an affinity for shoes…ok, I am obsessed with shoes. I have–as of April 2010–198 pairs of shoes in my closet.
  • Ok, that’s not exactly true, I don’t have a “closet”, I have an entire room for my shoes. All stacked up in their boxes and waiting for me to love them for a day.
  • I must have bizarrely shaped “Barbie Feet” or something, because I am most comfortable in 4-inch heels.  I will not buy or wear shoes that are uncomfortable, but I loooove to wear heels.
  • I hate dusting. I love cleaning my apartment – but I hate dusting. It is the one chore that always makes me feel like Cinderella… without the fairy godmother, who if she was any kind of good fairy would have Bippity-Boppity-Boo’ed my chores into oblivion.
  • I love black licorice. Not “American” licorice, not twizzlers or black Red Vines. I don’t like chocolate licorice, or any other type of “brown” licorice. Real black licorice is not brown when you bite into it – it’s grayish. I am obsessed with the molasses and aniseed flavoring.
  • I don’t like popcorn. At all. Haven’t had it for years and frankly, don’t miss it. I love the smell -but the squishy, crackly texture gives me the willies. I don’t even eat carmeled-popcorn
  • I am allergic to cats and dogs. I love kittens and puppies, but can’t snuggle them or I get all puff-faced and can’t breathe. We had both for pets while I was growing up, and I’d play with them all the time… but as I got older I developed allergies to their fur.
  • I have unusually long fingers for a girl –in fact, my hands are the same size as most man-hands. Which when I was playing the piano was great – but now I am kind of embarrassed about my long, bony fingers… and my chewed off fingernails. I have stopped biting my nails!   Huzzah for prettier fingers!
  • I am not afraid of heights or the dark or black cats or spiders or snakes.
  • I am terrified of sharks. I have never seen Jaws, and have no intention of it. I realize it is slightly irrational (seeing as how I live in the middle of the desert) but I can’t help it! I am scared to death of open water – due to the shark factor.
  • That all being said—I have recently become SCUBA certified.  So far I’ve only gone diving in freshwater with minnows…next step, ocean.  And possibly sharks.  Gulp.

That’s about it.  I hope you enjoy what you read and I hope you come back.  You can email me at heidikinsblog[at]gmail[dot]com.

I’ve been meaning to tell you *forever* that my dream car (the smaller size one, I have other dreams too:) is VW beetle, but a green one. Or perhaps a cream cab one. Or both. If I had the money. And the driver’s license, hrm, that is… A car you get happy just looking at!

I am happy to hear that you at least a little bit interested in hitting the slopes. You could try cross-country skiing first since it is a little slower paced and there are not any snowboarders out to kill you. The stillness all around is my favorite part. And guess what…the U will even rent equipment to you for your excursion.
Your shoes confession made me laugh. My aunt is just like you. If she finds shoes that she likes on sale, she will buy one in every color. Like you, she also labels the shoebox with a picture.
Oh, and I do love the new blog! Have a great night!

So, I don’t know you. I got to your blog from Kayla’s but glancing through your blog I think we would be great friends. I love to read (thus, I graduated with a degree in teaching English) and I absolutely love to travel. I have to admit though, I’m not such a fan of shoes (especially with heels-they always kill my feet after a day of teaching). If you ever want to, you can find me at http://www.scottandlonica.com/blog. Thanks for the interesting reading (I always appreciate someone who has a way with words).

So, Imelda Marcos, I thought I loved shoes, but I have been outdone! I miss your face, and am glad to hear that things are going well. I LOVE new cars, even if they only come because of the death of another. I got one last year and his name is Sammy. He is my current lover and I need no other.

Keep up the good work!

I don’t know how I came across this–I think I Googled “grown up haircuts” or something (just graduated from college; looking for a “grown up haircut”) and I love love love your blog. You’re a great writer–funny, wry, charming. Screw business and write a book!

Hi! Just found your blog via another, so definitely going to do some back reading. Out of curiosity, is it the old style VW Beetles you love or the new ones? (They are not a patch on the classics!)

How was Portrait? I’ve read it when I was 19. Tried very hard to get it. I almost convinced myself I did. ;)
