Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Scottsdale Studio, is one of my favorite places to visit. Last year I went and wandered around by myself for several hours, soaking up all the awesome. This year I loved having someone to soak up the awesome with me.

There really is something about a fantastic traveling companion. HRH indulged my love of frozen yogurt, nerdy architectural landmarks, and stationary sculpture. These, combined with her general Awesomeness, is why we have been friends for approximately twenty-seven years. That’s correct, HRH and I grew up on the same street and have been friends our entire lives, there’s not a kind of friend you happen upon every day and I’m lucky to have her.

Once upon a time, I was an architecture major. I love everything about it except the math. Why I thought Economics would have less math, I just can’t fathom right now. But without further discussion about all the icky calculus stuff, please enjoy Frank Lloyd Wright’s brilliance.

His office and presentation space. The ceiling was made out of canvas panels before being replaced by fiberglass, it makes for the most amazing filtered light.

The breezeway along the still-functioning architectural studio. Taliesin West is the winter home of FLW’s architectural school, and has 33 students this year. They live and work and study on this site for 6 months of the year, spending their summers in Spring Green, Wisconsin.

When Frank Lloyd Wright moved to Scottsdale in 1937 he purchased the land for a song and also paid extra for the water rights. The result is green grass, garden water features stemming from their own well.

FLW designed a thousand things that he never patented, things we use all the time and are so commonplace that I don’t remember most of them. But, he was a genius, let’s just leave it at that, okay?

Ah, sunshine. I tried to get all “arty” with these next couple of shots, don’t judge.

Near the Scottsdale Public Library is a “Love” sculpture, which seemed apropos to visit seeing as it was Valentine’s Day weekend. (Which, by the way, was perfect for me and full of all the things I love.)

I love how enormous this sculpture is, to be completely honest I may have squee’d a little when I came around the corner and saw it for the first time.

My mom always told me red and aqua don’t go together, but as of late I am really loving this combination.

I’m a nerd. I know. But at least I’m cute so people will put up with me.
