Filed under: There and Back Again
Located on Grand Canyon Highway is the oddest campground I have ever seen. I literally felt like I was being transported back into the time of cavemen and Fruity Pebbles. No, really. Flintstones Bedrock City, AZ specializes in, well, the Flintstones.

This is a brilliant marketing ploy. You can stop for lunch at the ho-hum, average looking cafe across the street. Or you can go to Bedrock City. I don’t think it’s any surprise as to where I wanted to go.

The cafe and gift-shop is kitschy at best, and if I am being less kind and more realistic, it’s down right trashy. But I’m trying to be kind, so kitschy it is.

But I don’t know of any other place where you can choose between a Chickasaurus or Fishasaurus sandwich, a Brontosaurus Burger, or a Dino Dog. The good news is the Bronto-Burger is absolutely delicious.

It’s amazing the things you come across while driving across no-name-towns in Arizona.

The sun was starting to set as we hit the very long stretch of road from The Grand Canyon (and Bedrock City!) to Salt Lake. I was lucky to drive along the Vermilion Cliffs just as the sun was hitting them. I really wish I had a camera and the photo-skills to do this justice. Imagine the above stretching for miles and miles and glowing red in the evening sun. It was stunning.
There is a brand new bridge along this stretch of highway (that I recognized in the beginning of Toy Story 3) called Navajo Bridge. It is worth a stop to gaze at the wonder that is red rock country.

Oh hai.

I know, I know, I have a thing for architectural feats of engineering. I’m taking pills and injections.

I really wish I could properly capture the brilliant blue sky and purple-red mountains in the background. Goodness, I love this country.

Leaving the Vermilion Cliffs behind I started the climb into the mountains, through Jacob’s Lake and on to Kanab, Utah. If you ever find yourself in Kanab, you should definitely stop at Nedra’s Cafe for some fantastic Mexican Food. I’m just sayin’, it’s a thousand times better than any fast-food rest-stop fare you may acquire.

Beautiful. Adding this to my places-to-see-before-I-die list.
Comment by Karen 2010 September 20 @ 8:16 amThe tiny bits of Utah and Nevada I remember heading through last time had the most AMAZING red rocks and red dirt. (Though getting it out of my hair was NOT so amazing!) I love the random places you find.

Comment by katelin 2010 September 20 @ 6:31 pmoh such tacky (yes;) places is really one of those musts on a holiday i think, treasured memories even if one wouldn’t want to have it in one’s everyday-life, but great for holidays! although the vegetarian/vegan options may be few i guess…
love the bridge and canyon, very un-swedish, very would-love-to-see-one-day!

Comment by gurrbonzo 2010 September 24 @ 7:00 pmSeriously gorgeous landscapes! How lucky you are to have all that on your doorstep. If you ever visit England, you’d be in for a bit of a shock. Our island is tiny in comparison! But oh so pretty. Come visit soon!
