After spending a couple of lovely, but blazing hot days in Phoenix with my family, it was time to head home. Instead of coming back through Las Vegas, I decided I really wanted to make the detour through the Grand Canyon. I had never been and always wanted to. Many people say “oh, it’s just a big hole that’s always been there and will always be there. To these people: You are idiots. It is breathtakingly gorgeous. I really wish I had a day or two to spend there, to be able to go on a hike or two and see the different facets. Or to be able to watch the sunset (or sunrise, but I’m not typically a morning person). To date, the Grand Canyon is one of the most impressive places I have ever visited.

The South Rim Visitor’s Center. This view just jumps out at you as you walk to the top of the rim–I am positive that I audibly squealed, immediately followed with having my breath taken away.

A little windy and overly sunny.

I can’t get over the scope here–photos clearly don’t do anything justice, especially not on my little point-and-shoot–the horizon seems forever away with all these layers and depth and color.

Two hours here is not enough, I think I could spend a week camping here and not get enough of this view.

This is from the southeast end of the Canyon, looking west.

After spending a few hours, going on some short little walks, and reading a lot of information about the formation and composition of the Canyon, it was time to go. The Grand Canyon is about 10 hours from home and it was almost 5:00 pm by the time I was back on the road. Again, next time I will plan to stay at least overnight, and preferably for a day or two.

Up next: The Vermillion Cliffs (which sounds like something off of the Princess Bride when The Sicilian first spots The Cliffs of Insanity! It wasn’t like that. Well, not exactly.

Comment by katelin 2010 September 17 @ 4:50 pmStrangely enough, I went to college in Flagstaff but never made it to the Grand Canyon once. Weird.
Comment by JENNerilizations 2010 September 17 @ 7:24 pmIt’s weird that I beat you to the Grand Canyon and I’m a New Zealander! I went when I was 11 or 12, with my parents.

Comment by Karen 2010 September 19 @ 2:27 pmI know that I may be missing the point of this post, but my favorite thing is this line, “To these people: You are idiots.” I applaud the simple honesty in that. I fully intend to work this into many conversations in the near future.
