It has officially been over two weeks at my new job and I can hardly explain how much I love it. This, of course, is in direct proportion to how much I hated-slash-was miserable at my previous job.
New Job is in a completely new industry, and I am FINALLY out of sales!
Let me take a moment to let that sink in.
I. Am. No Longer. In Sales.
Now, if you’ll excuse me I need to do yet another happy dance because managing to graduate out of the “Sales Monkey / Sales Drone” job title is, by far, the most important thing I’ve done for my career in several years.
I could go on and on about how my new position is both challenging and rewarding, with a variety of tasks and responsibilities and the promise of a raise at the end of the month. I know. I could go on and on about how a work week has never gone so fast, but instead I’ll just leave you with a quick before and after that should explain everything.

This is my old office. I wish I was kidding or exaggerating, but I worked in under these conditions for weeks and weeks. Ugh, I really don’t miss this place.

This is my new office, an office with a door that locks and two fancy desks (you can’t see the other) and a storage closet. I have a giant dual-screen capability, a fancy wireless headset for my phone and full reign to decorate as I please. I’m a little curious how the mustard-yellow and purple combo will work out with any kind of decor–thoughts? Suggestions? I haven’t had an office of my own in several years, and now I don’t feel like I am qualified to decorate my new space. I really do need help here. I can use a staple-gun like nobody’s business, but when it comes to cosmetic additions….um, I’m lost. Please help!
**Ok, for any of you keeping track, this is perhaps my fourth job in the last two-and-a-half years. Believe me, I’m aware. Please just be excited for me and let me deal with explaining the constant job-hopping to head hunters and interviewers, mmmkay?

I have a real need for plants in my work space. Something that doesn’t require a lot of sunlight, preferably, or constant watering. And maybe a couple of cute prints from etsy you can frame?
Comment by nancypearlwannabe 2009 June 17 @ 5:01 amI say plants too! There are ones called Money Trees that don’t require much sunlight at all. Or a small cactus. And maybe a nice painting that you would enjoy looking at?
Comment by Inna 2009 June 17 @ 6:43 amcongrats on loving the new job and the new office! as for the color scheme of it… um… eggplant and yellow are kinda odd colors to try to work around. i highly suggest decorating in neutrals since you arent gonna find much to match that

Comment by Sarakastic 2009 June 17 @ 7:04 amI’m so excited for you! And I LOVE the purple office. Maybe you could get some black and white prints to frame?
Comment by Jess 2009 June 17 @ 7:24 amno judgement here! i once had SEVEN W2 forms in one year!
Comment by miss chevious 2009 June 17 @ 7:29 amOh congrat on your new workplace and space! Other than I’m not comfortable with working with my back against the door (perhaps I’m totally misinterpreting how you sit from he pic?) and that purple wall colour being one of my least favourites ever I think it looks grand. Some paintings and plants would do wonder, and you know those ribbons you can hang on hooks on the wall and then clip on things that matters to you, postcards, special tickets, photos, little trinkets for a personal touch…?
PS How on earth can anyone let people work in such environment as your previous place?!? Brr… DS
Comment by Pia K 2009 June 17 @ 7:55 amI’m an anti-work decorator. And an anti-paint the apartment renter. So, I’m no help.
Comment by Lou 2009 June 17 @ 8:18 amCongrats on the new job! Glad you are loving it
The colors are interesting, but I think you can make it work! Yes, I agree with having a plant too. Check out Michaels (Ft.Union) though! It’s a smorgasbord of decoratives–You may be able to find several things to combine to make your office even more cute
Comment by Mikael 2009 June 17 @ 8:30 amGood luck with decorating!
Way to go, you! In this current economy, I don’t think any explanation is required. I can think of a dozen reasons why you might have had to have that many jobs in that many years.
I’m terrible with decorating, actually, so I’m no help here.
Comment by Sra 2009 June 17 @ 9:05 amOh, and that old office looks like a tornado came through. I once worked at a tiny desk shoved in a storage closet with network wires dangling down around me and closed cases stacked high in boxes behind me, but THIS! I’d rather go back to that closet than work in that disaster area.
Comment by Sra 2009 June 17 @ 9:07 amGlad you are enjoying your new job! With the purple I would do black and silver accents.
Comment by Jackie 2009 June 17 @ 9:22 amI am the world’s WORST decorator, but YAY for a job you are excited about! I’m so happy for you : )
Comment by Kiersten 2009 June 17 @ 11:08 amI’m feeling a Moroccan theme with that purple and yellow:)
Comment by Amy Thompson 2009 June 17 @ 2:09 pmYAAAAAAYYYYYYY!
Comment by Allie 2009 June 17 @ 2:19 pmIn terms of office-decorating tips – hm, well, probably the wrong person to ask. The only “office” I’ve ever had was a student one, and I covered it in Calvin and Hobbes cartoons.
I’m digging that purple wall.
Comment by Andrea 2009 June 17 @ 3:08 pmI love the colors of your office! I definitely don’t have any office decorating tips. My office consists of a desk in my classroom that is usually piled 3 feet high with things I need to get to and doesn’t have a grown up sized chair.
Comment by Erin 2009 June 17 @ 4:27 pmAll I can think of is framed photos on the yellow wall. Black frames to match the desk. Choose photos with lots of color to balance out the mustard yellow. Or you could frame programs from Broadway shows. That would be cool. And plants. Lots of plants.
But most of all, congratulations on finding a job you really love.
Comment by Cressida 2009 June 17 @ 7:39 pmwow, that’s crazy the old space. i think it says a lot about the company that they would let it be like that for weeks and weeks. glad you’re out of there!
and as for the aubergine wall…love it! i think you’ll be totally inspired by those colors. at my old job, we had some drawings that had been done by a cartoonist that we took with us everywhere. we had them framed and put up on the walls. everyone loved it, especially when people came to visit. oh, and at my work there are quite a lot of models of ships–my favorites are the tankers, but with the container ships, it looks like you could get in and play if you could just lift the glass covering. ships are nice. you could get one in lego perhaps?
Comment by julochka 2009 June 17 @ 10:48 pmThe new office looks great! Congrats on the new job!
Comment by Tootie 2009 June 18 @ 5:08 amThat old office makes me want to die.
Comment by Janssen 2009 June 18 @ 6:13 amOk so firstly congratulations!!! Secondly I’m just a little bit jealous, as you may know I want out of my place of torture so bad, but unless I win the lottery (you never know LoL) I’m stuck in the hellmouth for a while! Well at least until the economy picks up again!
Comment by grungedandy 2009 June 18 @ 6:37 amI would say that a really cool calendar is practical as well as pretty, other than that I have maps all over my desk so I’ve learned all the areas near me! Ok gonna get going work is screaming! Seeya Hugya *G*
Congrats on getting out of, what looks like, the storage room from hell! Also, I like the new office.
Comment by Lex 2009 June 18 @ 1:31 pmHere are my decorating tips: If the office is smaller, I can’t tell from the picture, I would get a really nice, framed, big mirror and then some art work. Or you could get three or four little mirrors and group them together (ikea has some great cheap mirrors). I like the idea of the black and white art work, but if you found some art work that had a rainbow of colors that would work too. Or even a wall sculpture could be cool, (maybe expensive, BedBathBeyond has some sculpture pieces that don’t break the bank). Also, I agree with the plant idea, but I wouldn’t just put all the plants on the ground, I would get shelves to put on the wall and put plants on the shelves. Though it looks like there might be a good place under your desk for a plant. Good Luck. You should post the decorated office pictures when you are done!
I wish I knew! Not much of a decorator myself, though I enjoy those who know how to do it. I’d love to see photos when you figure it out, though.
Comment by Caryn Caldwell 2009 June 19 @ 11:35 amI’m so glad you now have a job and workspace that you love!
