Temporary Insomnia? I has it.

Filed under: All about me, Things That Suck

I’ve been clicking through blogs, stalking people on Facebook, researching all sorts of biznass, and generally using the Internets as a temporary distraction from insomnia.

You know The Internets has got you when, upon logging into your gmail account, you are greeted with “Waking up at 2 AM?  Get some sleep.  Get the facts about Insomnia”.  Yes, it’s one of those Google-generated ads that subtly populate gmail pages, and yes I do actually read those ads, no matter what.  (What?  I was in the advertising industry for seven years, you’ve got to assume that something rubbed off on me!)

Le Sigh.  Does that counting sheep thing really work?  I have tried it but usually get distracted in under 30 seconds and sooner or later (sometimes, shockingly “sooner”) I am thinking about the plight of monks in Myanmar or how on EARTH to convert grams to teaspoons and what, exactly, is the problem with not believing in the current fashion trends/best selling authors/government.  Everything runs it’s time of popularity.  Even New Kids On The Block*no longer wears acid-wash, pleated denim.

*This is the first New Kids On The Block reference on this blog, I doubt I could recognize a song of theirs if I tried.  I grew up listening to Bach and Chopin and Rachmaninoff…not New Kids On The Block**

**I will never be able to abbreviate them to NKOTB, because I can never figure out what in the world people are so obsessed about when they simply write “NKOTB”…I keep trying to pronounce it phonetically, or try and remember what is so important about “En-kott-obb”.***

***You may now shun me.

I kinda have the opposite problem, I can’t stay awake past 10 or 11pm… I know, I’m like an old lady.
But whenever I’m stressed, knitting helps! And, as a bonus, it also makes you tired (if you’re doing complicated patterns that require a lot of thinking…).

haha, I get the randomist of google ads on my gmail, mostly prompted by the odd things my sister writes me (at least, thats what i tell myself. it can’t be ME, now, can it???)

Sadly, my google ads always suggest dating sites. It’s like my mom is in my email.

I didn’t know who New Kids were either. My friend had a poster of them in her locker that everyone made fun of and I couldn’t figure out why. I guess everyone can’t have good musical taste from the get-go, huh? :)

I had their record (I am old).

Counting sheep actually does work for me, but I have to really visualize them for it to work. I think what makes it work is that when I focus on imagining little sheep bouncing over a fence, and counting them as they go by, it clears my mind of whatever busy thoughts were preventing me from falling asleep.

I read somewhere that a sugar cube is 4 grams of sugar, so if you can visualize that, you can probably estimate the exchange.

I used to have success curing insomnia by telling myself that whatever I was thinking about wasn’t so important that it couldn’t wait until tomorrow, but that’s not very effective for me anymore, so I usually get up, move to the couch, and read a book until I feel my eyes start to sag. Sometimes that keeps me up well past when I should be asleep though.

Insomnia bites. I do the same as you, only I don’t click over on the FB ads. I just click on every link, every status update, every picture of “Vacation 1983!” until it all becomes a blur of small, sandy children posed with scuba gear outside a never-ending succession of beach houses.

Then I go back to bed.

methinks you need some sleep.

i think they came up with that abbreviation for the purposes of twittering b/c typing it out would use up too many of the precious 140 characters.

it too surf the ‘net when i can’t sleep. i look upon it as healthy.

and as for those google ads…i was having a VIDEO chat w/my sis via google chat wherein we discussed hats at length and suddenly that ad at the top WAS ABOUT HATS. google is all-knowing and quite possibly controlling the weather.

ok, now that i’ve gone mad on your blog, we may have to shun me too…
