Happy Chinese New Year!
恭喜發財
Which means, it’s time to announce my New Year’s Resolutions. Yes, this is different than The List, which already has a thing or two crossed off, just so you know. For those of you new to the heidikins party, here’s the deal: I make New Year’s Resolutions every single year, I actually have a book with a page for every year’s resolutions starting in 2000. It is not a coincidence that this book has the Chinese character for “Luck” on the front. However, I make my resolutions for Chinese New Year. Well, actually, I make them January 1, but solidfy them with red envlopes and fortune cookies. If I can’t keep a resolution through January, there is no point adding it to the yearly list, right? Right.
Welcome, Year of the Ox. Gong Xi Fa Cai!
In looking over last year’s resolutions, I managed to keep most of them…and had I not had that nasty car accident I would have been able to keep them all. Just sayin’.
2009 Resolutions. At least the ones that are fit to publish.
1. Lose remaining extra weight (which will put me back to my pre-accident weight, finally!)
2. Run 2 Half-Marathons. (Already signed up for the first, started training this week.)
3. Make dinner 3x per week. (Upgraded from last year’s 1 time per week.)
4. Reduce credit card debt by at least 50%. (In all honesty, the plan is to eliminate it completely, we’ll see how it goes.)
5. Complete 6 classes at the University of Utah. (3 Summer, 3 Fall)
6. Become more proficient in Mandarin Chinese. I will need some serious help to accomplish this one.
7. Plan and take two international vacations.
8. Finish my first book, which is being listed as “fiction” so I can take artistic liberties with the truth.
Ok. That’s it. The Resolutions. A few more than last year, but I know I am perfectly capable of accomplishing all of these goals. Hey, I may even get everything wrapped up by October. Ok, that’s actually slightly impossible because of Number 5. Blast. Ok, fine. I’ll accomplish the above 8 goals by December 31, 2009.
Huzzah to 2009!

Did you know you need a passport to travel to Canada? That makes it technically “international.” Just in case you get in a pinch, for #7, think about that….
Comment by Leah 2009 January 28 @ 7:44 amAwesome list! I especially can’t wait for your book!
Comment by Janssen 2009 January 28 @ 7:50 amWhy aren’t you aiming to accomplish them before the next Chinese New Year? Don’t you get a full year like everybody else?
Comment by Jess 2009 January 28 @ 8:06 amNi how! I’m learning a little Chinese from my son’s TV shows: Caillou and Ni How Kai Lan! Anyway, I think you ought to travel to China. It will help you accomplish the goal of speaking Mandarin better–or I could put you in touch with our translator Xiabo, who translates into Mandarin Chinese for us. If the International travel is happenin’ this year, go for the gold! No Mexico or Canada, that’s too easy!
Comment by Jen 2009 January 28 @ 8:28 amThose are some great goals! You’ll have to tell us more about the book. It sounds interesting!

Comment by grungedandy 2009 January 28 @ 9:14 amOne of these days when I decide to visit China, I’m taking you with me. That way I don’t have to learn Chinese
Lofty goals, but I think you can handle them easily, as you are a very structured type. Good luck!
