I was running a bit late to work this morning, negotiating the o-dark-hundred “traffic”– which really means trying not to miss my exit because I am still half-asleep–when I suddenly was wide awake. Did the radio really just say “we’ll be interviewing Clinton Kelly”….? I turned up the volume and paid attention. If Clinton Kelly was actually in studio I was turning my car around right. this. minute. to go and wait for him. Yes, I would be one of Those Girls. But, hello, this is Clinton Kelly! He’s fabulous! He’s on TV! He wears orange and light blue together! Yes, if he was actually in my fair city I would be sallying forth to meet him, regardless of the circumstances.
Unfortunately, he was only calling in his interview to talk up his latest book on my morning show of choice. Crap. That meant I actually had to show up at work. However, I did feel better knowing that I was Put Together, just in case I had met Clinton Kelly I would not have been an embarrassment.

My Put Togetherness is all RA & OPH‘s fault. See, they started this fantastic little bloggy project called Mission: Put Together, where for the month of October all members try to be Put Together whilst at work, at the grocery store, and generally while we live our lives. November 1st we can go back to hoodies and scrubs. I kid. The point is to keep attempting to look great without spending a ton of money on a whole new seasonal wardrobe. And there is a photo pool I can lurk in and get tips from other Put Together Bloggers. Combining M: PT with a certain obsession with Polyvorewill produce a fashion crack-head…which may or may not somewhat resemble a certain heidikins for the month of October. Just saying.
Now, dear Internets, I have the ultimate Fall Accessory Question, and because the Internet knows everything, I am hoping you will be able to answer my plea.
Scarves: How do you wear them? How do you not wear them? I’m pretty comfortable with the small, chiffony/silky square ones, and I can handle the longer, skinnier ones…but what about those ginormous square ones? How are you supposed to tie them? My first thought was around my hip, all gypsy like. (Don’t worry, if that look was attempted it was safely within the confines of my bathroom, was purely for laughs and was not repeated. Ever.) In the pic above I attempted to reproduce the “magazine” look for big, cuddly scarves…but I really am unsure if I succeeded. Is this chic? Or is this lumber-jack meets lobster bib? What are your thoughts and words of wisdom, oh Sage Internet?

Very chic, very 80’s & very in BUT a rule of thumb I always go by if you went through that stage once i.e. you were just coming into your fashion sense in the 80’s (i.e. ME) you really can’t do that scene again it makes you look dated so if you were a child of the 70’s can’t do them again! Or the 90’s it just makes you look dated or the oldest teenager on the block! (The fear that I have all the time is this too young for me?) Trust me really & truly there is nothing worst than trying to recapture it or never moving on LoL but if you weren’t born or not really conscious of fashion then it’s ok to plunder the archives & mix it up have fun and remember a classic never dates & throwing it together with a wacky thing from the past can really bring it to life!
Love the idea of being put together such a great idea (but can you still wear your slouch cloths at home? LoL) Seeya Hugya *G*
Comment by grungedandy 2008 October 8 @ 1:04 amLove the outfit, except for the scarf. I really almost like it, but then not quite. I think I would like it tied like that if it were a different scarf. A lighter more fluid one or without fringe. Then again, it’s difficult to tell without being there in person, so I say go with whatever you feel looks best
Comment by JenKneeBee 2008 October 8 @ 3:41 amI adore that dress… actually, the whole outfit. I have trouble with scarves, too, but I like the way you have yours in the picture… I think you can basically do whatever you want with them!
Comment by Operation Pink Herring 2008 October 8 @ 5:44 amOoh, I love that dress! I only have long pashmina-type scarves, and I use them as shawls when I’m chilly or just knot it around my neck for the heck of it. Short hair means a cold neck!
Comment by RA 2008 October 8 @ 6:38 amOooh. Scarves are tough. The European women have the whole draping/tying thing *down*, though, so maybe this is just the excuse you need to travel to Paris or Milan or something.
Mostly I’m concerned that that scarf makes you like a terrorist, Rachael Ray.
Comment by Gwen 2008 October 8 @ 6:59 amI love scarves because the Gilmore Girls always wore them in every shape & form. However, I’ve never actually left the house with one on because I’m baffled about how to wear them.
Comment by Sarakastic 2008 October 8 @ 7:02 amYou’re totally working the scarf! I have two scarves that I put on almost everyday and then take back off because I don’t know how to work them. Maybe YOU should help ME! Mine are long and skinny.
Comment by Britt 2008 October 8 @ 7:46 amI’m still stuck on Clinton Kelly.
Comment by Naomi 2008 October 8 @ 8:07 amI like what you’ve got going on with the scarf there. Once in first grade I tied a bandanna around my neck like a scarf and all the other kids called me a boyscout (because apparently boyscouts have the trademark on wearing bandannas around your neck). So I gave up wearing any kind of scarf other than a long winter scarf after that. But now I’m thinking all those first graders can eff themselves.
I love Clinton! He is so funny and so much better than the original WNTW guy. That show is the one thing I miss about cable, and they don’t have it on dvd as far as I can tell. How is a girl to cope?
Comment by Sra 2008 October 8 @ 9:10 amYour outfit looks great, but I’m totally LOVING your mirror.
Comment by Noelle 2008 October 8 @ 10:05 amOk honey. Let me be your resident scarf expert since I live in San Francisco and EVERYONE here wears scarves. Seriously. I think I wore one 4 of the 5 workdays last week. You pull it off great – that exact scarf was all the rage in Spain this last March and you are wearing it correctly in case you were wondering. The long skinny ones can be tied around your neck by folding the scarf in half and then putting it around your neck and pulling the loose ends through the loop – this is the most popular way, but if the scarf is thinner, you can just wind it around your neck a few times. I have scarves in every color but I gravitate towards my light blue and hot pink ones. I definitely wear them the most as I feel like they go with most of my wardrobe. And really, 50% of fashion is confidence anyway, right?
You look wonderful. People who don’t like the scarf must live in a cave – no offense.
Comment by Steph 2008 October 8 @ 10:16 amYou look fantastic! I usually fold my scarves in half lenthwise, wrap it around my neck and pull the ends through the loop. A little fluff and it looks fabulous
Comment by La Petite Chic 2008 October 8 @ 12:30 pmYes, you’re wearing the scarf correctly! The more you experiment with them the more creative you’ll get with them. I love wearing them on my head, the way you’re wearing yours, or with a knot in the front and back, depending upon what I wear underneath. People are just going to have to get used to scarves and the whole terrorism thing is scary but as a nation we have to get over it!
Remember Sue Jacobson? Some people can work the scarf and no one bats an eye. It’s all about the confidence of the wearer, I agree!
Comment by Jen 2008 October 8 @ 1:41 pmi heart clinton kelly. he is fabulous.
Comment by katelin 2008 October 8 @ 3:42 pmDude. DON’T. DO. THAT. If Clinton had been here and I MISSED him – it would’ve been the topper on my shambled existence. Though – you make a good point – what would I wear to see Clinton Kelly? Oh there’s just no way to know!
Comment by Andrea 2008 October 8 @ 3:59 pmoh i love clinton kelly, obviously, i love what not to wear. i am proud of you for looking so cute and ready to meet him if necessary. anyway the whole scarf thing, i have no idea, i wish i did though, so i will be reading your viewers comments to get tips!
Comment by lacey 2008 October 8 @ 8:08 pmYou totally got the scarf right… It looks great!
Comment by jenn 2008 October 9 @ 12:11 amPerfect!
Comment by Amy 2008 October 9 @ 10:13 amI heart Clinton Kelly! Seriously, I adore him on WNTW. And though Stacey can get a wee bit annoying after a while, I keep watching him because I have a super big gay crush on him.
Big scarves? Bah! I have a petite frame. I’m told not to wear them, because I’ll drown. Or at least that’s what Clinton would tell me. So, I’m no help to you!
Comment by Nilsa 2008 October 9 @ 11:48 amI love scarves! Fall makes me happy because I can start wearing them again. You should start watching the Gilmore Girls for scarf lessons.
I adore Clinton Kelly…I would also skip work to see him if given the chance.
Comment by Erin 2008 October 10 @ 7:06 pmYich. Hate the scarf–so much. However, I love you–and the dress, and the shoes.
