Excuse me, Waiter? …Hey! You!

Generally speaking, I like going out to restaurants.  I like trying something new, whether it is ethnic or a special sauce or the chef’s special.  I like reordering my favorites, I admit that I crave certain dishes and will endure long wait times and inconvenient locations for that one, amazing entree.  That being said, I can be a bit complicated when I order; I like things the way that I like them.  I don’t ask for a dish to be completely reworked, but I generally like sauce–of any variety–on the side and I always ask for extra tomatoes, and I like avocado on dishes that don’t necessarily come with avocado.  I usually ask for two glasses of water because somehow when I sit down in a restaurant I become part-camel and can’t help but guzzle the H2O.  To me, these preference don’t translate into “restaurant snob”, or “cursingly complicated”, or even “high maintenance”…ok, maybe a little high maintenance, but at least I admit it with an apology to the waiter/waitress for the inconvenience in the first place.

This last weekend, Handsome and I–who, it should be noted, are in a serious restaurant rut–decided to try out a new pizza place called Pizzeria 712.  The atmosphere was a cozy blend of funky-modern and quaint cafe, the food was fantastic, the water was luke-warm without ice (what?  that’s not right!) and the wait-staff was perhaps the worst I have ever come across.  Our waiter took his sweet time to come by with refills (part camel + warmish tap water does not make for a happy camel, for the record), or ask if things were alright, or ask if we needed a box, or the check, or something that would resemble any kind of Real Waiter.  And the restaurant wasn’t even busy!  After finishing our absolutely divine pizza (I ordered a Margherita pizza with prosciutto), Handsome and I sat for twenty five minutes waiting for our waiter to stop by.  No refills on our warm tap water, no mention of a dessert menu, no offering to box up our leftovers, no check.  Twenty-five minutes.  I’m all about a wait staff leaving me to enjoy my dinner, but when the table of six skanky girls sitting 5 feet away is seated 20 minutes after I am, and leaves 10 minutes before I do, while ordering similar dishes - I’ll admit, I get a little frustrated.  AND, what makes this all worse, is in trying to politely and calmly explain the situation to the manager, he replied in a insolent and quite rude tone, “well, did you need anything?”  …Seriously?  It was all I could do not to rant at the man.  And I never rant in restaurants.  Other than the high-maintenance order, I am a great customer and a generous tipper.  This man was so incredibly calloused about the whole situation.  So unsympathetic.  So jerky.  So completely moronic.  This was such a perfect example of the type of yuppie hippies–who I hate–who thrive on looking down their nose at those of us who ingest corn syrup or Red #40.  Aaaargh!  I feel a rant coming on…

Dear Pizzeria 712,

You have failed me as a restaurant.  (However, seeing as your food is completely delicious, I may or may not order take-out from time-to-time.)  Your fancy art, industrial lighting and crisp white napkins led me to believe you were a class joint.  I expected restaurant quality service, I am quite disappointed with the level of attention I received/didn’t receive.  It was on-par with what I would expect from a disgruntled waitress at an all-night diner.  If not worse.  And I am being kind.  Perhaps in your quest for fresh ingredients and organic produce you could include a quick training on customer service.

Thanks, heidikins.

I have turned over a new leaf…or rather, re-turned an old leaf.  Remember the Whip It Up challenge?  I need to get back in the habit of concocting one new-to-me recipe every week.  I’m done with restaurants for a while.  Which means, it’s time to turn back to my good friend, The Internet, and see what she’s hiding as far as cook-at-home deliciousness is concerned.  I really am quite excited about the whole thing.  Down with bad-service restaurants!*  Three Cheers for heidikins’ kitchen!

*Yes, in case you were wondering, I am hoping the owners of Pizzeria 712 see this post, because frankly, their half-assed customer service–both from servers andmanagement–was appallingly unprofessional and completely inexcusable.  I couldn’t find a comments/contact us section on their website in which to direct my rant, so I must resort to passive-aggressive-like behaviors of ranting somewhere else.

First, word of mouth is the best way for restaurants to make or break their existence. Sounds like Pizzeria 712 won’t be around very long. Second? What kind of stupid name is Pizzeria 712? Don’t even tell me their address is 712. So original.

Oooo bad service makes me so angry. This is where the tip (or lack of) comes in. A tip is a gratuity given for good service; if you don’t get good service, the server shouldn’t get a tip. Instead he or she should get a (politely worded) note indicated why he/she didn’t receive a tip. Sounds like these people would be too insolent to take something like that to heart, but if it happens often enough they’ll change. Money talks.

Comment by Melanie

I can’t stand poor customer service, especially from people whose only purpose is to be knowledgeable and courteous. Phone customer service people, I’m looking at you.

Usually, if I get horrible service at a restaurant,I leave a penny or a nickel as a tip, just so it’s clear that I didn’t just forget to leave one. I also try to talk to the manager so that he/she hears it straight from the customer.

Comment by RA

Oooh, that’s infuriating. Especially when the food is good, because that makes it extra hard to remain principled about not giving such asswipes your hard-earned money.

Comment by Gwen

This is why I’m so glad that my brother taught me to order a hamburger & then ask them to hold or change every ingredient until I ended up with the pasta.

Comment by Sarakastic

I like my water lukewarm and icefree so I’d been happy with that part, if I had gotten refill and good service. Such weird behaviour and to be quite honest, rather the usual thing in Sweden I’d say, we don’t have a tip-system like you in the US have, but still common decency and working in a service-profession should make one act in a certain way. One would imagine, or wish…

Comment by Pia

I’m like Nilsa. Down with restaurants and businesses that name themselves after their addresses.

Also, boo on poor service. You can do better in your own kitchen!

Comment by Noelle

i *hate* bad service. i always talk to a manager, too, and if i had a manager respond like you did i would have done the same as you.

Comment by cady

They do have a blog linked from their website. If I were you, I’d go leave them a comment with a link to this post. I was tempted to do it myself, but really this is your rant and your business, so I’ll leave it to you. I’m glad for this warning, because good food is only half of what we’re paying for when we eat out, and if they don’t have adequate service, then they don’t get my business. I’m not even high maintenance, but I expect at least minimally acceptable service, and it sounds like the service here was nonexistant. I hope you stiffed them on a tip.

Comment by Sra

You are so within your rights to tip. Waiters/waitresses who act like they’re doing you a favour by allowing you to eat at their restaurant need to have a short sharp shock! Next time I’m in Salt Lake City I will avoid Pizzeria 712 (except for takeout). :)

Comment by Allie

Oops, when I said “so within your rights to tip”, I actually meant “to rant”. There is something wrong with the part of my brain that deals with words right now.

Comment by Allie

How annoying! I love that place, though. A guy in my ward owns it and is the chef, so we go there often. Sorry you had a bad experience!! Nothing worse than a dumb waiter.

Comment by Hannah C.

Love the place but no one deserves that kind of service! And by the way – 712 refers to the temperature of the wood-buring oven they use to cook the pizzas. It has nothing to do with their address.

Comment by sue

I HATE bad service… SO I totally hear you on this rant.

And, actually, on the cooking thing as well. September was a rough month, I let things slide, but now it’s October, so yes – new recipes for me as well!!! :)

Where to begin… I am sorry that you had a less than enjoyable experience at our restaurant. As you would expect, it is our goal to make sure that each person who walks through our doors feels that their needs are met, that they are being taken care of and that if there is a problem we will do whatever is within our means to rectify it. I don’t know what night you were in but I get the sense that you are still feeling rather upset. I can understand. Things were not going how you expected and when you tried to remedy that situation you felt the manager was not giving proper response to your concerns. I eat out a lot and there is little I find more infuriating then being “abandoned” by a server. Having said that, being in the restaurant industry I also take into consideration that the server, managers, cooks and dishwashers are people too, just like you or I. That there will be times where they have a less than stellar day and that sometimes when the stars are all aligned that everyone working a given night will have all have a bad night together. Does that excuse poor service, mediocre food-NO. (By the way, I appreciate that you recognized the delicious pizza). It does however give me some insight to the fact that even though I am a guest and am paying that sometimes my expectations are not going to be met. Is that fair… I don’t know but I do know that taking it personally doesn’t make me feel any better. I think I can personally guarantee that you and everyone who has commented can look back on an experience where they have not acted in a way that measures up to the fullness of who they are even when it’s their job or it is expected. Again, does that excuse the fact that we didn’t provide you with a stellar experience…NO. Does it allow me to step back from a situation and put in into perspective, that hey, tonight wasn’t what I was hoping for but that maybe next time will be… Yes. All I can hope is that you too are able to see that we were not trying to ruin your night or make you feel mistreated. We fell short and I as the Owner take responsibility for that. I certainly hope that you find an opportunity to make it back in and if you do that you will come say hi to Joseph(the other owner) or I. I also hope that all of those who commented in a negative way but have never been in to eat will find a way to make it in because I can tell you unapologetically that we are without a doubt THE BEST RESTAURANT AROUND… For the record the 712 is optimal temperature for cooking pizzas in our wood fired oven.

I can’t believe that happened and I can’t believe the manager was so rude about it. I hope you didn’t leave a single cent as a tip.

Also, I clicked on the link in hopes that they’ll see the referral source and come over here.

Comment by Jess

That is terrible service and even worse that the manager himself was rude about it. Serving isn’t the easiest job but if the restaurant wasn’t even busy… well there’s really no excuse. Good for you for taking a stand in a way that you can!

Comment by heymic

oh man that kind of service would drive me insane. matt and i have had some pretty bad waiters in our times out too, it’s so frustrating. but there’s nothing like talking to managers or taking it to the internet to get your point across.

Comment by katelin

girl, i have to give the owner props for responding to your blog. i’m friends w/ the owners sister and really need to check it out. i’ve heard nothing but good (and that’s not just from bets and steve). sounds like the service wasn’t up to par, yet the food (which let’s be honest, is why we go to restaurants in my opinion) was excellent! thanks for reminding me of heading down to utah county and checking it out. only problem i see is that there isn’t another location in slc. ugh, if i must i’ll take a jaunt to utah county. btw, thanks for coming over sunday night and yes, i’ll email you curry recipe.

Comment by Erica

Ohh. At first when I read about 712 and the horrible service I was inclined to not try it out, but then you said that the food was good. That made me think that this is DEFINITELY a place I need to try (my husband is a pizzaholic).

I always try to give restraunts 1 chance on food, 2 chances on service. The food is why I eat there, if it sucks then I am not going to waste my money there a second time. The service depends on the server, if I get 2 in a row that suck – the company has lost me to anything more than occassional take-out orders.

Comment by tauns

To Mr. Soelberg,

Thank you for commenting on this post, that takes guts, for sure. In the next couple of weeks I may try to return to Pizzeria 712, I like what Tauns said about giving a restaurant 1 chance on food and 2 on service. I can agree that sometimes people just have a bad night. I also think that simply telling a customer “I’m sorry, we’re having a rough night here” can bring out forgiving responses from those customers.

So, before I delegate Pizzeria 712 to Take-Out Only, I will give you another try. And, whether it is a good experience or not, I will share it with the Internet.

Comment by heidikins

I’ve eaten there probably a dozen times since they opened and have never had an experience like yours. Give it another chance… the food is absolutely amazing. There’s nothing that compares to it in Utah.

Comment by DGB

Good for you for voicing your opinion. And good for the owner for responding.

The place has been highly recommended to me – I just never get down to Utah county!

Comment by Tiburon

Bad restaurant experiences suck, especially when you’re thinking it’ll be great.

Comment by Larissa

Well, I hate to say it (because I am related to the one of the managers who hopefully was not the one who was rude to you), but Pizzaria 712 hasn’t given me good service at least 50% of the time I have gone there. I keep going there because the food is absolutely phenomenal. I’m not kidding. EVERYTHING I’ve ever put in my mouth there, which is 90% of the menu, is fantastic. BUT, I agree–the wait staff seriously needs some training on how to smile and be a little more prompt. Hopefully Colton reading your post will help in that area. (Oh, and they don’t do take out, so you may be in trouble in that area too). But keep trying. You’re bound to get a good waiter at some point, and the food will soooo be worth it.

Pizzeria 712 is by far my favorite restaurant in the state. I eat there regularly and have always had great experiences with the food, the staff, etc. I can’t get enough of that place. You should definitely give it a second try.

Also, they do have contact information on the website. I’ve sent an email before with feedback (all positive).
