I have survived my first week at my new job, even though I had leave my house somewhere close to 6:00 in the morning. Seriously, I am not a morning person. I Ti-Vo’ed the Olympics and have been watching them a day late and in half the time (seriously? those commercial “breaks” are ridiculous!!). Work is going well so far, I am in a completely new industry and have had to learn a lot of new information. I actually really like the “learning new info” part, it reminds me of being in school. I have been packing my lunch the night before and am quite happy with my leftovers. I have almost figured out the building and all it’s crazy turns and dead-ends, and really, I am only having one problem.
What should I wear?
My office is “Business Casual”, and I’m not really sure what that means. My previous jobs have been more along the lines of Strictly Corporate America with strictly corporate dress codes. Women must wear nylons! And jackets! No open-toed shoes! Must look like a cookie-cutter drone! Seriously, it was intense. My regular work-wear looked something like this:

With such strict dress codes, it is difficult to have any kind of fun with your clothes. Of course I rebelled, and wore fancy shoes but I had a very limited margin for creativity. This week I carefully chose my outfits but I couldn’t help but regress back to my corporate guidelines. But, dear Internet, what is Business Casual?!? For boys it’s easy, khaki’s or slacks and a shirt with a collar. But what should women wear? I don’t own the ubiquitous khaki pants. Can I wear a t-shirt? What if it is layered over a button-up shirt? Is a jacket too corporate? What about a denim jacket paired with a skirt or dress? Is that too casual? I tried to be “business casual”, but I’m not sure if I succeeded. I think I’m a bit half-and-half, depending on your definition of the term. I was definitely more dressed-up than most of my co-workers in our training class, but I have no intention of ever dressing for the job I have; I always dress for the job I want, which–shockingly–does not put me in a cubicle for 8 hours a day. Because I love Polyvore so much, I’ve used it to recreat a few of my outfits for the week, what are your thoughts?

My office has Casual Fridays…which apparently is more casual than “business casual.” I knew about this policy, and I knew that jeans were allowed on casual Friday. However, because I was still a little unsure of how casual “jeans allowed” was going to be, I opted to err on the safe side and chose a denim skirt. As I was sleepily walking through the parking lot I wondered if I was dressed too casual.

Imagine my shock and surprise when I entered into the building. Everywhere I looked I saw outfits that made my corporate-eyes bulge out of my head. I saw t-shirts so large they looked like they were sleep shirts, jeans with enormous holes in the knees, flip-flops, logo T-shirts, even a Chicago Bears jersey. One girl actually looked like she was going to a club; denim mini skirt and a sparkly tank. I think about a dozen people asked “didn’t you know it was casual Friday?” Yes. I knew. But I was unaware that flip-flops, straight from Old Navy, would qualify as “work appropriate.”
What are the rules of wardrobe at your work? What is acceptable? What is a pink-slip? How do you determine what is ok and what should be limited to the weekend? Please help!

I like those outfits, and part of me wishes I had a wardrobe full of them, but my office is all about the casual casual. There’s no dress code at all, and I’m usually wearing the hoodie I keep on the back of my chair because the A/C is too cold.
Comment by Noelle 2008 August 18 @ 6:07 amHumm that’s a difficult one, it really depends on the company; if it’s a creative company usually almost anything go’s in my experience (it can be quiet shocking!) whereas a more middle of the road company can be a more strict!
I think what you’ve picked out for the week already seems ok, and in fact the attitude of wearing cloths for the job you want is a good one! Guys always complain that we have it so easy and that we have so many choices but sometime too much choice can be a curse!
The Friday thing can be so hard we have it here and the deal is no t shirts & no trainers but I’ve found I can wear converse and plain t shirts with out any complaints it’s just how you wear them that counts.
I often find that a nice dark jeans, semi fitted shirt, converses & funky bag goes down well as it’s casual enough for dress down but makes me feel smart enough that I’m not dressing too down. You could swap the converse for heels the shirt for t shirt and then it would still work also the jeans for a jean skirt or just funky skirt that goes with the T
For in the week you can get these blazer style jean jackets that could work out as a dress down staple.
On the whole I quiet like to keep my weekend cloths separate from my work cloths or how will you tell when you’re not at work?
But baggy t shirts (those that you wear to bed) & shorts clubbing style out fits (for clubs) should really remain in those environments they are not really work cloths and don’t do you any favours by wearing them on a dress down day they will give the powers that be the wrong impression about you or at least the impression that you don’t want them to have about you.
Wear what you feel comfortable in and don’t be swayed by the bad choices of the others you can of course moderate your choices so you don’t stick out like a sore thumb but be individual it’s always a breath of fresh air!

Also, I LOVE that purse from the Friday outfit. Oh my heavens, I’m totally coveting it over here.

Every year our office receives “the memo” reminding people not ot wear tank-tops or floppies to work! I think you’re on the right track by dressing a little better than everyone else, but try not to dress better than your boss (unless they are wearing flip-flops too) because sometimes they don’t like that!
My office is quite casual, except for when the Legislature is in session. Then, most people wear suits. The kind of work I do doesn’t require a suit, but the khaki skirts I have and button up blouses layer over black T-shirty sleeveless tanks do the job.
I hear ya, dressing office casual is often harder than business corporate! But hopefully the work will be more enjoyable and the office less uptight, however office politics never change!

My office is supposed to be BusCas, which basically means that jeans are blackballed, but polyester sweatsuits are OK. On Casual Fridays half the office wears outfits that I’d be embarassed to wear to the gym. It never ceases to amaze me. I’d just take note of what the others are wearing and take that as what Business Casual means in this instance — but I don’t think anyone ever got in trouble for exceeding the dress code. When in doubt, being too dressed up is always better than getting caught in your illegal trouser jeans on a Tuesday. Ahem. Not that I’ve ever worn illegal trouser jeans on a Tuesday, or anything.

Comment by Lindz 2008 August 18 @ 10:11 amWe are “business casual” too, but unfortunately that term encompasses everything in between jeans and suits, and so it’s very hard to gauge. People do it differently but basically I stick to pants and knee-length skirts, flats or sandals or knee-high boots in the winter, and nice tops without cleavage. And on casual Friday, nice, clean jeans and a cute, non-revealing top.

My office is quite casual, even though it’s a law firm. If I wear, say, some Express editor’s pants and a non-T-shirt top, that’s pretty well-dressed around here. We have casual fridays too, but people can get away with wearing jeans during the week, and I probably abuse that more often than I should. I actually like dressing business casual, as I feel comfortable but still professional, and I don’t even know how to dress in fancy business clothes. Good thing I don’t have to.

In my opinion, business casual means basically… not a suit. Dressy, but not as strict as business formal. When I worked in a business casual office, I tended to wear a lot of skirts and pants with nice tops or camisoles with cardigans, and I was more creative with my shoe choices than I would be in a business formal office. For example, open-toed pumps or slingbacks were fine, sometimes a nice summery wedge or heeled sandals.
I think you can get away with a tshirt if it’s a nice, fitted one and you pair it with a dressy pair of pants or skirt and heeled shoes. I would probably try to avoid denim in any format in a business casual office, and that includes denim jackets.
If you felt overdressed compared to your coworkers on casual Friday, I’d say take it down maybe one notch to jeans instead of a denim skirt, but otherwise don’t worry about being overdressed when you’re wearing something you would wear to a coffee shop with a friend! Just because everyone else is dressed like they’re watching TV at home, doesn’t mean they should.

I wear what I wear, no matter what day in week it is, and yeah I know I can come off as a bit of an over-dresser (is that the correct word for it?), but I like to feel representable and comfortable at the same time. I would never ever wear anything like the CF outfits you describe your new colleagues wear in public *brrr*…:( That’s what I wear at home, lounging with the cats…:o)
Btw, I totally agree with Janssen, I covet that pink Friday handbag… sigh.

Though, if you think your colleagues dress poorly, you should see what some of the preschool teachers I work with show up in. Sweats…with holes…and paint. I always get criticized for over dressing.

We definitely aren’t allowed to wear flip flops, but a lot of people wear skirts with leggings and cute sweaters and I think that trouser jeans are totally acceptable for business casual. As long as you look nice, you are fine. You need to get some khaki pants of some kind – its not like they have pleats anymore, so you’ll be ok. I promise. Heck – if you put a scarf over any tshirt, it dresses it up like 5 notches.

My advice would be to just wear whatever the person with the job you want is wearing, unless that is jammies because that is wrong.

And every other day of the week. From what I surmise, your image collage of business casual is spot-on. Think black slacks, knit and/or button down tops, heels. No jacket required. Khakis work perfectly, too. Dresses with flats or heels, no nylons. (Thank God.) Skirts. Embellished tops. Chunky, statement jewelry. For Casual Fridays, I usually go with something like what you’ve put together, except jeans in place of the skirt. Here’s my next challenge, though: in a week I start a new job, and in that position I will only work from home. What will I wear? Jeans and t-shirts? My gym clothes? Underwear? I have no idea. It’s a whole new level of culture shock, this concept of a 5-second commute and no one to see my cute earrings and chunky bracelet.

You did a great job on your first week! You could probably go more casual on Friday, but do not need to. Think dark wash jeans. No one should be wearing flip flops to the office!

My office has a business casual policy – no jeans but nylons aren’t required either. I usually go the dress pants/sweater or button-up shirt/nice shoes route. We only get to wear jeans on the third Friday of every month. However, my boss wears a suit everyday.

Comment by Elle 2008 August 20 @ 6:01 amI don’t think you can ever go wrong by taking things up a notch. My (NOW-EX!!!!) job was quite casual… jeans and t-shirts for most. I just don’t feel professional that way, so I’d pair jeans with cute shoes and a blazer.
I’d go for mix-and-matched suits (black pants with a patterned blazer), blouse with a sweater vest, twin set… biz casual is ambiguous, but you have lots of options!
