Pike Place Marketis one of those Seattle wonders that is chock-full of tourists, but is really catering more to a local trade. How many tourists do you know who will fill their carry-on bag with artichokes and eggplant? Or bother shipping a bouquet of lilies home? The fish, I admit, I can understand paying to have shipping home in a frozen lump, however I was not in the market for fish.
Whilst in Seattle, Handsome endulged me and let me wander around Pike Place Market for a while, snapping pictures like a crazy tourist. I couldn’t help it, everything looked so amazing!

Which reminds me, I must come up with something Farmer’s Market Fresh for this week’s Whip It Up Challenge.

Seriously, I could probably buy veggies at Pike’s Place every week for the rest of my foreseeable life and still feel a little thrill every time I found something new, or “exotic”, or particularly delightful. Sigh, I’m a nerd. I didn’t purchase anything this trip, I couldn’t justify checking my luggage so I could carry on vegetables. Shoes, I can justify; veggies, not so much.

I am slowly getting to know Seattle, and hopefully next time I visit Handsome and I will hit up a museum or something. Our trips to the Northwest have been short and jam-packed of family activities, I didn’t even get to meet up with Isabel or Jihan this time around (next time girls, ok?). I would love to go crabbing, or take a trip up to Vancouver, or hang out downtown for a few hours. I haven’t even begun to look up all the amazing things Seattle has to offer–there’s more to it than Starbucks and fog–because I know that my time in the Emerald City will be happily spent bonding with Handsome’s sisters and playing with his niece and nephews and talking to his parents. I’m happy with that, but one of these first days I’m going to google “Things to Do in Seattle” and start making lists that will never be finished. That’s just the way I roll. (Coincidentally, I also make lists of countries or cities I want to visit, and most of these lists have entries in the hundreds. Seriously. I’m an ambitious list-maker and not quite as ambitious in the list-completion category.)

…and I’m off to la-la-land thinking about visiting Iceland and Belize and Namibia and Myanmar… Also heavily involved in my la-la-land fantasies (not THAT kind of fantasy) is Handsome; I love how just seeing him makes everything seem a little easier. I love that I still get butterflies when he reaches for my hand. I love love LOVE it when he spontaneously slow-dances with me and gives me butterfly kisses on my cheek. I would go on, but I think the Handsome Ramblings will be another post for another day. Right now I am trying to wrap up the odds and ends of being unemployed for–count them–14 weeks.

Comment by Jess 2008 August 6 @ 6:38 amI think it’s OK to have an affair with produce. I hear it can’t knock you up.
Comment by Lou 2008 August 6 @ 6:57 amAh, that every downtown in the nation had such an obvious emphasis on homegrown veggies and fresh fish! Alas, in Seattle, people care!!
Handsome is obviously a nice guy! I like him (for you)!
Comment by Jen 2008 August 6 @ 8:16 amOh man, next time you visit Pike’s Market, go to the little Turkish bistro at the end of the market opposite the end that has that market sign in your picture, and then order a Doner. They are like Gyros, but distinctly different, and exceptionally delicious. I used to buy them in Germany all the time, but that place in Seattle is the only place I’ve found them in America (although I’ve heard they might have some in NY). They are awesome! Get them with everything on ‘em!
