Last night Handsome & I braved the crowds at The Cheesecake Factory to participate in their 30th Anniversary goodness; all cheesecake priced at $1.50. That’s what I’m talking about! (And now, I’m having left-over Key Lime Pie Cheesecake for breakfast; I don’t believe I can ever go back to bagels for breakfast.) While we were waiting for our table–50 to 75 minutes, thankyouverymuch–we decided to wander around Nordstrom. And because we are talking about heidikins here, self-professed shoe-addict, we started in women’s footwear.
And the Shoe Goddess–that would be me, the Shoe Goddess–saw that it was terrible, and she turned her face away in horror and embarrassment.
I was actually shocked at the dearth of cute shoes, or rather, the complete absence of any pair of shoes I would even consider. More specifically, there was only ONE pair of shoes that I thought “Wow, those are cute!” and would have asked a sales person to fetch my size. Admittedly, I am fairly picky when it comes to what I will put on my feet, but in the wide world of Nordstrom’s shoe department, one would think that I, a card-carrying Nordstrom fan, would find more than one pair of satisfactory footwear.
Now, before I get bombarded by comments with links of your favorite shoes (oooh! will you send me links of your favorite shoes?!?) allow me to give you a few facts regarding my love affair with shoes. My opinions are strictly for what goes on my own feet; I will love you regardless of your shoe choice. Unless, of course, your shoes are uggtastic, in which case, we need to chat.

I do not like flat shoes, ballet flats included. I have big feet (size 10) and a really high arch and ballet flats offer absolutely no support for my feet. After wearing flat shoes (flip flops, sandals, whatever) for a few hours my feet are aching for a 4-inch heel to support my arches. Also, due to the hugeness of my feet, ballet flats do nothing to make them appear smaller. If anything, they make my feet look longer than necessary. A shoe with a fantastic heel will shorten the distance between big toe and Achilles tendon, making my feet appear smaller, which is what I prefer.

I am not really digging the moccasin trend. Or the lace-up oxford stiletto trend. Or the all-over ugly-shoe trend..oops, was that my outside voice? Better scratch that last comment. I prefer shoes that make my feet and legs look longer, leaner, sexier…moccasins, with no arch support, and oxfords do not fit that bill. I also try to steer clear of T-strap shoes because they tend to make my calves appear chunkier than usual, and with half-marathon training muscles, um, they aren’t “slim” in the first place.

And must we actually have shoes that look like 1930′s factory-worker shoes? The bad colors, the squatty heel, the unflattering cut. Sporting something like this in the office, or the mall, or on a date is like wearing an ill-fitting, saggy swim-suit on a super-trendy beach of bikini-clad surfer-chicks; Not A Good Idea. I really can’t get over the badness of these shoes…it hurts my heart to think that some poor girl will be taking them home with her and actually wearing them out in public. Say a prayer for that girl, ok? (Oh goodness, I just realized that it is possible that one of you–my dearly loved readers–might actually be loving these shoes…if that is the case please let me know. I will still love you and think you are fabulous, but I will also light a candle for you. I think in this type of extreme case, God will overlook the fact that I’m not Catholic.)

I saved my least favorite ugly-shoe offender for last, and I really hope that this Ugg-rant will be brief and relatively painless, although my gut tells me otherwise. I don’t care what strung-out celebrity US Weekly pictures in Uggs and oversized sunglasses; and I don’t care how many people claim these are the be-all, end-all of comfortable footwear; and I don’t care that they come in pink–THESE SHOES/BOOTS/SLIPPERS ARE UGLY!! If you want to wear them around the house to keep your tootsies warm, fine. But do not wear them to the grocery store, or to class, or to work, or–heaven forbid–on a date. /End Rant.
Are you still there? Have you deleted me from your reader for picking on your favorite shoes? Please don’t, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to offend. I don’t care if you wear ballet flats every day, and if you can rock the lace-up oxford, I applaud you. I don’t expect you to love my 4-inch heels and I certainly don’t get offended when someone tells me that there is no way they would wear spike heels to the grocery store. It’s ok. I understand that my feet are unnaturally shaped like Barbie feet and therefore need to wear heels. We can still be friends, right?
So as not to leave on a sad and depressing note, I think it only fair to give you proof/hope that cute shoes do still exist, albeit according to Nordstrom, in considerably smaller numbers. I would like these in black, please!
To Nordstrom’s credit, while I was looking for pics of the Ugly Shoes, I did find a handful of cute ones online that did not show up in my store. In which case, I must go have a chat with the shoe department manager of my local Nordstrom, the man/woman must be on a rogue crusade to demand Salt Lakers conform and be clad in ugliness from the ankles down. He/she must be reckoned with, so help me. Thank heaven I’m heading to Seattle, Nordstrom’s hometown, tomorrow; hopefully their selection of shoes will be less depressing.

I have small feet (6 or 6.5) but also a very high arch and so most flats are uncomfortable for me too. The one pair of “flats” I really love are actually wedges. And yes, flats do make your feet look larger.
And I HATE all those shoes except the flats, which I think are kind of cool looking.
Comment by Janssen 2008 July 31 @ 8:51 amHa! I love those Steve Maddens you posted and would totally buy them.
I also just bought two shoes that you would hate. Good thing they make so many different kinds of shoes that can fit all sorts of tastes.
Comment by Hannah C. 2008 July 31 @ 9:01 amOMG I wish my feet begged for a four-inch heel. You are CRAZY.
Comment by Jess 2008 July 31 @ 9:03 amAmen! I haven’t been able to find shoes that I LOVE in a long time. They all seem so ugly or uncomfortable to me. Also upsetting? My feet seem to be growing, from a 10 to an 11. NOT happy.
Comment by J P 2008 July 31 @ 9:09 amI totally agree – I struggle to find a pair of flats that don’t give me blisters or rub my heels raw. In the ugly shoe category, I gave my dad a pair of Crocs for Christmas, thinking that he could wear them gardening and boating. He wears them everywhere. I’m now regretting my decision.
Comment by Lynze Wardle 2008 July 31 @ 9:26 amAgreed on all counts
Comment by Lindz 2008 July 31 @ 10:49 amI agree pretty much across the board. Though, I do admit to wearing flats or low heels to work. You try chasing 4-year-olds with autism around in 4-inch heels. It’s not pretty.
Comment by Erin 2008 July 31 @ 10:51 amSOB! You have broken my heart. I have those UGGS black and I lived in them last winter.
But, I also did go to Cheesecake Factory for lunch yesterday and we were there for a total of two hours. OOPS!
Comment by Rhi 2008 July 31 @ 11:20 amhow did i miss $1.50 cheesecake?!?! blasphemy!!
and as for shoes, i’m really no help. i’m a size 10 too and i never wear shoes with support (flops and flats all the way), my feet are going to hate me one day. but i don’t want to wear heels since i’m so tall. but i think they all look pretty. good luck!
Comment by katelin 2008 July 31 @ 11:43 amHmm… I’ll be a dissenter. First of all, I love flats. I think they are classic and can sometimes be the most perfect shoe to complete an outfit. As for Uggs, yep I don’t mind them either. I’m a teacher, and in the winter I need winter boots that take 2 seconds to throw on before supervision and Uggs fit the bill without making me look ridiculous.
Comment by brandy 2008 July 31 @ 12:37 pmUh… I agree on the Uggs. I’ve never understood the trend with those, hideous!!! But I must admit, that since I broke my foot last year, I’ve had to live in flats, which sadly make my size 10′s look huge!
Comment by Jenny 2008 July 31 @ 12:45 pmYou crack me up with the shoe rants!
In spite of the fact that when I wear heals I always fall down and get hurt. Prior to reading your blog I thought I was the only one in the world who thought Uggs look bad on everyone and should never be worn outside! Bravo!
Casual for me is oxford-style, as long as they have proper arch support! High heals for me are one inch pumps!
Comment by Jen 2008 July 31 @ 1:04 pmDon’t hate me, but I don’t think all Ugg boots are evil. However, I will never EVER wear them, because they’re such a cliche. Every “cool” student at uni is wearing them, with skinny jeans and a fur-lined jacket. I’d prefer looking dowdy and dorky to looking like a clone.
Comment by Allie 2008 July 31 @ 3:40 pmWhat? You don’t like flats? Oh it burns us. I loves the flats precious. Mmm…cheesecake for breakfast. Do you know I’ve never been to the Cheesecake Factory? Weird. Most especially NOT the one adjacent to the Fashion Place Mall. Can we say FHE every SINGLE CRAZY CHILD SCREAMING NIGHT!?!??! And they thought they wouldn’t have enough business in Utah! Psh!
Comment by Andrea 2008 July 31 @ 6:48 pmI love flats, but not THOSE flats. Gross!
And I will be in thongs & flats & sneakers my entire trip, because .. I’m on a budget. And going for the comfort factor. And saving the strappy shoes for going out at night!
Maybe I’ll buy some SUPER CHEAP shoes over there. But it’s hard for me, because most of the gorgeous high heels I buy, just aren’t comfy.

Pingback by the lace reader 2008 August 1 @ 7:03 amI agree with you most of what you’ve said here, although I do like flats. Some of them are very unflattering, but I wear them because they are easy and comfy. Also, I have a pair of boots that you would probably think are hideous… and if my memory is working correctly, I wore them when I met you. Ha ha!
But anyway, what I wear and what I love are two completely different things. I’m currently coveting a pair of these http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/42565970/c/138087.html
(just kidding)
Comment by Britt 2008 August 1 @ 12:41 pmP.S. How do you feel about the gladiator sandals that are supposedly ‘hot’ this season?
Comment by Britt 2008 August 1 @ 12:51 pmI agree for the most part, though I *am* a ballet-flat girl, simply because my feet have so many issues and those can generally be counted on to not make me wince in pain 5 minutes after putting them on my swollen, chopped-up and stitched-together little feet… But I WISH I could wear heels all the time a la Heidikins, because I do find them much cuter… and sexier… and all of that. Damn my poor little messed up feet!
Comment by Z 2008 August 3 @ 7:39 amI for one am very glad that flats have become fashionable, as I can’t maneuver in any sort of heel. But, yeah, those up there with the plaid? Fug-ly!
Comment by Sra 2008 August 3 @ 8:37 pmOoh Cheescake Factory, sigh, I had my very best encounter of the cheesecake kind there once, banancream…
As for shoes, I love those “1930 factory worker” brouge shoes, adorable and that gorgeous heel! So Very. Me:)
However due to a bit of feet problem as lately I have to wear shoes that doesn’t press too much on the front of my feet behind the toes (I have no idea what it’s called even in Swedish) hence the lower the heel the better *ouch*. All my pretty heels…:/
My top three favourite hate objects shoewise would be wedges, Crocs and Uggs, are we still blog-friends?
Comment by Pia 2008 August 5 @ 4:37 pmI wish my feet begged for a 4-inch heel!
Comment by Operation Pink Herring 2008 August 7 @ 12:18 pmSome of the latest shoe trends baffle me. On the Today show the other day, the style “experts” were touting a high heeled bootie with a peep toe.
Now, I am all about funky shoes, but a high heeled peep toe bootie? No. That is just created to sell more shoes. No one needs that shoe.
Comment by Laurel 2008 August 13 @ 9:23 pmNot all UGGs are hideous. I do admit that the one you had posted is my least favorite. I once told myself that I would NOT follow the trend with any UGG shoes, but I tried their boots on wondering why its super popular…. and holy crap… THEY’RE REALLY A+ COMFORTABLE and RELIABLE that they would not fall apart. SO I bought a pair and also bought a pair of UGG dakota moccasin. EEEK!! AND GUILTY THAT I AM AT WORK RIGHT NOW WEARING THEM. lol
I AGREE that women w/ bigger feet shouldn’t wear flats, they don’t quite compliment. (At least some don’t)
Comment by Marie 2008 December 27 @ 12:54 pmomg i love those shoes they are not ugly at all!!
Comment by lilly 2009 February 15 @ 7:41 pmI take back my comment and the Micheal Kors ‘Morgandy’ pump is hot.
Comment by Ms. Manhattan 2009 April 14 @ 2:48 pmi have to wear flats or at least low-heels, because high heels are so painful for my very wide feet.
Comment by LIllieee! 2009 May 30 @ 6:44 pmI’m searching for a cute pair of oxfords right now, but the ones you posted really are kinda ugly.. for the rest, I totally agree, those are hideous
Comment by Anika 2009 July 19 @ 9:19 amwell, i agree about the flats. i even have a size six foot, and the make my feet look big. but the lace up oxfords are pretty much to die for! i love them, and im pretty sure that i have at least four pairs.
i just think that they are way adorable and totaly classy.
and the uggs, i thought they were terrible at first, but i actually have to admit, they are the perfect shoe on a cold day in the city, when your hopping from cab to cab, building to building. so, i stand by my uggs, even though they’re not terribly good looking.
