Most of the time, I consider myself fairly adult-like. Of course I have my moments of non-adult behavior; running through the sprinklers barefoot, eating popsicles for breakfast, begging Handsome to take me to see a movie about a robots falling in love and saving the worldspace-ship–for the record, I loved Wall*E but wished there was a bit more dialogue. I felt like I was watching an hour-and-a-half pantomime, minus the scary painted faces. Part of growing up is emotional maturity and wisdom and blah blah blah. That’s all fine and good, but in my opinion there are also non-physcological milestones that need to be met. For me, before I am a Real Life Adult I would like to check off the bulk of this list:
- I want an apartment with air conditioning; a puny fan and an ice-pack does not count as “A/C.”
- I want a dishwasher. Ahhh, bliss!
- I want a washer and dryer, in my apartment. No more schlepping dirty clothes to the laundromat.
- I want a room for my books, a library with a big comfy chair and a fireplace.
- I really would love to have a Steinway Grand Piano sitting in my living room; not an upright, not a baby-grand, but a full-size, gorgeous Grand Piano. (Ideally? This one. Realistically? Something like this.)
- I want a garage so I don’t have to shovel off my car in the winter and scrape ice off my windows.
- I want enough kitchen storage for a whole set of dishes, and possibly an extra can of tomato soup.
- I want a dining room with a table and chairs, theoretically, I want to be able to throw a dinner party for 10 without using folding chairs or asking people to sit on the couch, plates balanced on their knees.
- I want a real camera, I am drooling over a Nikon 300.
Sigh. It’s amazing how long this list can get so quickly; I am not typically a material person, but I really really want air conditioning. And a good camera.
When you Grow Up, what do you want? Your answers don’t have to be “I want, I want, I want, Me, Me, Me, Mine, Mine, Mine*”-ish, they can be mature answers like “world peace” or “self-cleaning linen shirt” or something.
*Double points if you can name this movie.

I want a beach house, either in yellow or blue. And I want a job that I can do from home!
Comment by Katie 2008 July 10 @ 8:20 amI feel you on air conditioning, dishwasher, and the washer dryer. If MM and I had moved into his condo, we would have all those things. In a not-so-great neighborhood. Oh, and I want an engagement ring. RIGHT. NOW.
Comment by Lou 2008 July 10 @ 8:36 amI want a yard for my pup. I want to live in the city AND have my (future) children attend good, public schools. I want to stay happy.
Comment by Nilsa 2008 July 10 @ 8:38 amI want my own bedroom. Where the sun is always shining in through the windows.
Comment by Isabel 2008 July 10 @ 8:45 amI want a real camera too! We registered for one for our wedding and I am seriously hoping that a bunch of our friends go in together and buy it for us.
Comment by Jess 2008 July 10 @ 8:54 amI want a kitten.
Comment by Sra 2008 July 10 @ 8:58 amHook?
Right now topping my list are a) a washer and dryer in the house/apartment, and b) a garage.
Other than that, when I grow up I want to get a book published.
Comment by Kiersten 2008 July 10 @ 8:59 amSomeone just beat me to it, I was gonna say Hook. I am in the same boat, drooling over a nice camera and a piano. For now I want to know where I’ll be spending the next four years of my life.
Comment by Noelle 2008 July 10 @ 9:13 amI feel that I am movin’ on up by ditching the roommates and getting my own place. Of course, 300 sq ft can only satisfy for so long! I’ll be wanting real, actual rooms soon.
Comment by Laurel 2008 July 10 @ 11:05 amthere are so many things i want when i grow up…whenever that happens. i want an apartment. i think that will start off the whole thing, moving out of my parents house is step one, haha. and then it will be to have a house with a porch and a yard. must haves
Comment by katelin 2008 July 10 @ 11:11 amI’m moving next month and once of the requirements for the new apartment was AC, dishwasher, and in-unit laundry! Me and the bf can’t be attorneys and live like undergrads still so we splurged.
Right now, I want a nice bedroom set. A new computer. Not to have loans to pay off, LOL.
Comment by Lindsay 2008 July 10 @ 11:35 amA king size bed. A ton of kitchen counter space.
And to save the environment.
Comment by Janssen 2008 July 10 @ 1:13 pmOn my list are a house with a jetted tub in the master bath, and enough land to have horses. I am lucky enough to have the nice camera and have to say it’s a must!
Comment by Jessica 2008 July 10 @ 1:19 pmI’m kind of, sort of looking for a new abode and the first few things on your list totally jive with what I’m looking for. Problem is, it’s kind of hard to find all these things affordably in Philly. I’d also love to not have a roommate.
Comment by J P 2008 July 10 @ 3:12 pmgood question! When I grow up, I want financial security, a simple life, to live near my parents, and six shower heads in my shower.
Comment by janet 2008 July 10 @ 7:17 pmI want matching hangers in the closet & preferably a closet the size of Montana.
Comment by Sarakastic 2008 July 11 @ 7:13 pmWhen I grow up I want real, coordinating furniture. Furniture that doesn’t come in a flat box and require assembly by owner. Furniture that is not made of particle board. Real, grown-up furniture.
