A week or so ago I decided that I wanted to make myself a dress. I received a sewing machine for my birthday a few months ago, but up to this point I haven’t really used it very much. I made a few costumes for a high school play, but I don’t really think that really counts. However, I’m going to NYC next week (Ohmygoodness, so stinkin’ excited!), and I am not the kind of girl who can wear jeans to a Broadway play; and it’s gonna be June; so I wanted a new summery dress. Mission: Project Runway. I went to the fabric store, picked out a not-too-complicated, easy-breasy pattern, and found a fantastic mini-stripe in blue and white, kind of men’s shirt-like. I carefully cut out the pattern pieces, making sure to add about 3 inches to the length so I don’t look hoochy with heels, I read the directions very carefully, popped in Season 6 of Sex and the City and started sewin’. And the results ended up pretty dang cute, if I say so myself.

I plan on waltzing around Broadway in this swingy dress with my navy blue, patent peep-toe wedges and bright yellow accessories. It may not be New York chic (aka “wearing black head-to-toe”), but the idea of such a cute, summery dress makes me incredibly happy.
While I was upstairs sewing away, catching up on Carrie Bradshaw’s backstory, I listened to the rain. Usually by this time of the year Salt Lake has already experienced triple-digit temperatures. Not so much this year, it’s been cool, rainy, cloudy, and even a bit snowy at higher elevations. It has been fantastic! Everything is incredibly green and cool, and I even caught site of my first rainbow at a only-slightly-soggy picnic on Monday.

I hope you have a happy weekend.

Comment by Lacey 2008 June 6 @ 11:00 pmThat rainbow makes me want to cry I am so homesick. Beautiful mountains. Good picture. Oh, and kudos to you for making a dress! The most I have ever accomplished for myself on my sewing machine is a very simple drawstring skirt and a kind of ugly baby outfit:)
