A friend of mine–who, it should be mentioned, was raised in the Deep South–told me once that while she was growing up red shoes were unacceptable on women; the saying went that only little girls and hookers wear red shoes. I laughed, and then I felt badly (really badly!) for all the grown women who were discouraged from wearing red footwear. I think every female should have a pair of red shoes in her closet, regardless of age, profession, or geographic location; red shoes are acceptable, if not preferable, for everyone.
Personally, I wear red shoes when I’m having a bad day; there’s something cheering about seeing a flash of color every time I look at my feet. I wear red shoes when I’m having a good day; I think of it as celebration for my tootsies. I wear red shoes to parties, to church, on dates, to the grocery store, on job interviews; I think that red shoes are appropriate for every occasion except funerals.
So, to start your weekend off right, here are a couple of pairs of my favorite summer-weather only red shoes. I have a new, vampy-red pedicure and I can’t wait to get these lovelies out on the street (in the non-prostitute sense, of course). Enjoy!

Ahh, strappy, satiny, sexy…truly lingerie for your feet. Love these shoes! Love!

I know these were super-popular a few summers ago, but I still absolutely adore them! The heel, the patent, the peep-toe…no wonder they were so popular.

What isn’t to love? Ankle-wrap, wedge, and fantastic red-orangey goodness

Heart! I’m thinking of pairing these with a white eyelet halter dress and a denim jacket. Hello, summer!

Red shoes are one of life’s small pleasures. I covet the first pair VERY strongly!
Comment by Margarita 2008 May 16 @ 7:41 amMy red ballet flats are like little girls next to your grown-up lady shoes here! So pretty.
Comment by RA 2008 May 16 @ 7:41 amI love red shoes! I was trying to buy a simple pair of red pumps a couple weeks ago and they were impossible to find….either someone is hording them all or we have to insist more people start making them
Comment by Jackie 2008 May 16 @ 7:53 amI love red shoes! Yours are so great!
Comment by Hannah C. 2008 May 16 @ 7:58 amThis inspires me to buy another pair of red shoes. I have a fab pair or pointy, kitten heel red patent leather kicks that I love, but I could definitely rock some sandals or wedges…
Comment by Laurel 2008 May 16 @ 8:31 amI don’t actually think I own any red shoes. But I do own purple shoes, which I think are my own personal equivalent.
Comment by Jess 2008 May 16 @ 9:06 amI adore red shoes, and in the last six months, I’ve purchased about five pairs!
A friend of mine, when telling her about one of the recent red shoe purchases, told me that she’d never, ever wear red shoes. I thought that was one of the saddest things I’d ever heard, and told her that every woman should have at least one pair. She disagred with me…tragedy…
Comment by Lexi 2008 May 16 @ 9:12 amMust get myself some red shoes. I love all of yours, particularly that first pair.
Someday you must post a picture of every pair of shoes you own.
Comment by Janssen 2008 May 16 @ 10:12 amOOOooo I loved the last two shoes! Fun and then devilishly sexy.
Comment by Kate 2008 May 16 @ 10:40 amOh, red shoes, love them, I have several pairs myself in different shapes and forms, yes I agree, they make me happy too!
I’m not a fan of wedges though, but the other two are just lovely, lovely!
Comment by Pia 2008 May 16 @ 10:57 amOne of my favorite pair of shoes are these high heeled shiny red pumps with big buckles at the toes. I feel sharp and in charge every time I wear them. Here’s one giant SIGH for all the southerners who have been denied such freedom!
Comment by Nilsa S. 2008 May 16 @ 11:07 amI love those shoes! They’re making my closet feel very black and brown right now. I’m always hesitant to buy colored shoes because I think they won’t match anything I own. But then I wear green sneakers almost every day. Go figure.
Comment by Noelle 2008 May 16 @ 11:22 amLove them all – red shoes are a staple for me!
Comment by Laurie 2008 May 16 @ 11:40 amI adore red shoes. I got a gorgeous pair when my sister came to town last month and they make me SO happy. You, my friend, should be a stylist! (And while I’m making suggestions, a stylist in greater BOSTON…)
Comment by Trish Ryan 2008 May 16 @ 12:11 pmOooh, I love the first ones! Red shoes make me feel sexy
Comment by Katie 2008 May 16 @ 12:50 pmI propose, my dear, that you write a book. Fiction, non-fiction, I don’t care. But it needs to be first-person POV. You have such a fun, conversational tone that is easy to read. You make us feel like we are curled up around a carton of ice cream and laughing, crying, or complaining together–all of which are enjoyable when done with a good friend.
Comment by Kiersten 2008 May 16 @ 2:56 pmSo many fun shoes, and no way to get to your closet to steal them…
LOVE them all!
Comment by Z 2008 May 17 @ 4:41 amI wonder what, in the deep south, they think of Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz? I can kind of see her point, though. Red shoes are worn to grab attention, wouldn’t you agree?
Comment by Angela 2008 May 18 @ 10:14 amAnd here i was thinking it was gold shoes that were only for hookers (which didn’t stop me from buying those gold flats!)
Alas, I am off right now to return my red peeptoe slingbacks… I just can’t do the heel. Yours are fantastic. How on earth do you walk in those?
Comment by Operation Pink Herring 2008 May 18 @ 10:46 ami love the red peep toes, those are so cute and very fun!
Comment by katelin 2008 May 19 @ 1:25 pmThanks for the hair-color input, Heidi. I can’t believe that beautiful blonde is all natural – lucky you! I too love red shoes, but my pair of Seychelles are getting worn out. Shoe shopping sometime?
Comment by Lynze Wardle 2008 May 20 @ 10:30 amoh how I agree. there is just something about red shoes that make you feel sassy and not always in such a sleezy hooker kind of way. I love them.
Comment by jordan 2008 May 20 @ 4:29 pmOoooh aaaaaahhhhh… I LOVE all of those, and especially the third pair.
Comment by Allie 2008 May 21 @ 9:33 pmIt’s been forever! I am happy to see nothing has changed. Heidi is still accumulating an insane number of shoes! Miss you.
Comment by Stephanie 2008 May 22 @ 3:02 pmI love all of the fabulous red shoes! I want to find some! How many shoes do you have in that fabulous closet of yours? Well, it is so fun to read up on you & your thoughts. I’m coming out end of June…think we need another cousin playdate?! Love ya!
Comment by Megan Hunter 2008 May 22 @ 9:34 pmwhere are you? I miss you!!!
