Half-Marathon vs. heidikins
2008 April 7, 8:59 am
Filed under: Run! Run! Run! just as fast as you can...

Let’s have a little bit of a break, shall we?  Perhaps take a page from the Book of Perspective.  I am running my first Half-Marathon on April 19, less than two weeks from today.  As of Saturday, this was the score, in miles:

  • Half-Marathon: 13.1
  • heidikins: 10 and ridiculously sore.

And then things got worse.  Current Score:

  • Half-Marathon: 13.1
  • heidikins: 10 and missing one toe-nail from her right foot…blast!

Really, if you just look at the numbers it seems pretty clear; this race is going to kick my butt!  I spent probably an hour last night carefully cutting out more than half of the nail from my big toe; which is now all raw and ouchie and generally quite scary looking.  I will not be posting pictures because, um hello, that’s nasty.  No one wants to see that.  I don’t want to see that.  I don’t even really want to think about it.  Unfortunately, every time I take a step I am painfully reminded that I am missing something from my foot.  It doesn’t hurt as much as I thought it would; and I will probably still complete my scheduled 10-mile run tonight; but the idea of having an ugly right foot all through open-toe sandal season really isn’t helping matters.  At all.

I am the type of person who always has her toe-nails painted; bright red, burnt orange, pearly pink.  If I am without polish I kind of feel like I’m naked.  Correction: I would feel more dressed in toe-nail polish and a smile than a 10′x10′ drop-cloth and no polish.  That’s just the kind of person I am; always polished, well, at least my toes are always polished.  After my self-inflicted toe surgery from yesterday I decided that taking my toe-nail polish off would make the missing toe-nail less noticeable.  I am wearing open-toe shoes today to give the poor thing a chance to breathe and not be squooshed, and every time I look down at my feet I have a moment of terror akin to the junior high school nightmare of showing up to school in your underwear.  I feel naked.

I feel naked and I’m missing half of my toe-nail.

And it’s snowy.  (Hello?  April?  Are you there?)

And I’m wearing open-toe shoes.

I am missing half of my toe-nail with the remaining nine-and-a-half nails sans polish, i.e. naked.

Ergo, I am naked.

May I remind you it’s snowing.  Naked + Snow = Bad combination.

Back to that Perspective thing; I am toast.  Naked toast, no less.  Naked toast that will be running a half-marathon in less than two weeks minus one-half of a toe-nail.  I am suddenly more terrified than I have ever been about this race.  At this point I have been training too hard to quit, and the idea of being sidelined by a pithy half-toe-nail seems ridiculous.  So, I am shaking my fist at the Half-Marathon Gods, wrapping my damaged toe in something soft, tying on my shoes and going on a ten-mile run tonight.

Defiance?  Yes.

Crazy?  Probably.

Am I going to do it anyway?  Absolutely.  Stay tuned for results.

[Editor's Note:  I am well aware that the only reason for this post is to keep myself in the running for this race, pun intended.  Somehow announcing to friends and strangers that I will be doing something despite any and all odds makes me more likely to actually complete the damn thing.  So, here I am announcing: I will finish this race.]

Your adrenaline will be pumping like crazy! You’ll probably just keep running after mile 13:)

Good luck to you and your toes!

Ouch, that hurts even to think about, the poor toe losing its nail:(

And I agree, blogging is great for keeping yourself under pressure to do those things you either don’t want to do at all or procrastinate for as long as you can…

THANK YOU for not posting pictures. And I hope you kick that half-marathon’s ass.

Comment by Jess

okay, you are totally cracking me up. I’m sorry about the toe. Maybe it’s good I’m not a real runner….

Comment by janet

I would take your missing 1/2 toenail over my stress fracture any day.

Sorry about your toe! I am glad you are sharing about your half marathon, it gives me hope for doing one in the future as well as helps me realize the 5k I am doing in a couple of weeks is nothing!

Hope your toe gets better quickly so you can put your polish back on :-)

1. So, so sorry about your poor toe! 2. You’ll kick that marathon’s butt and all your family and friends will be SO PROUD of you! 3. Let’s go get some molton chocolate cake :)

Love you,
Vanessa

Consider it a rite of passage. If you’re going to do distance running, you’re going to have some pain and nastiness along the way.

And seriously, I did my first half marathon after being a “runner” for only six months. You are going to be fine. You’re going to be better than fine.

You poor love! Just think though – you’re going to be a marathonner soon, and it’ll all be worth it.

(I’m so jealous!)

Comment by alyndabear

oh man that is never fun. let’s hope the rest of your toenails stay in tact for the marathon.

Losing toenails is a rite of distance running passage! Revel in it!

(If you can. Ouch.)

Remember how I was all, “Guess what Heidikins! i’m running the SL 5K that day?”

Well, I lied. I quit, and I’m too poor. Will you represent me in spirit?

Comment by Britt

OK…I guess I should check all sources before I post anything on anything. It sounds like you ARE running the 19th’s marathon. I think that you will be running right by my house. Well so I have heard that the marathon will run by my house, but e-mail me anyway so I can give you details so you can see where I call home.

I have no running advice, but lots of sympathy for the lost toenail. I dropped a brick on my foot once; the nail fell off in early June. I contemplated painting the skin where the nail should be, just to make it look more normal. Thank God they grow back!

Hooray for you! Go Heidi! (I hope this is giving you the motivation you need) I am in utter admiration that you would even consider doing a half-marathon. It’s the sort of thing I would laugh hysterically at the thought of. And with a missing toe-nail! That’s the sort of thing I would accept gratefully as a sign from God that obviously I have not been called to run in races. I have absolutely no commitment.

Good luck! My husband has run two races in a many weekends. No half marathons though. He tells me that’s next year. If he loses any toenails, he’s NOT sleeping in the same bed as me!

GOOD LUCK!

Toenail/fingernail issues weird me out more than even the grossest surgery. What on earth happened to make you have to cut most of it off?

Comment by Leslie

You will finish the race!!! You go & I feel some of your pain. Greg is making me run a race in June and so I’ve been trying to train but I hit my little toe on the barstool and I am losing the nail-I also feel naked without polish! Anyway, I couldn’t help but laugh and smile about the predicament you are in. Gotta love it BABY!!

Ha naked toast. I once broke my little toe & had to wear sandals in winter too. Sandals in winter would be an awesome band name. Good luck on the half marathon, you can do it!

Comment by Sarakastic

Losing a toenail is like a badge of honor! You will rock this race.

Comment by Operation Pink Herring

First and foremost – thank you for not posting toe deformity pics. ICK! Next – that’s AWESOME! If you are losing toenails that makes you so totally hard core and so totally COOL. Lastly – you are gonna rock the race sista. Rock it real good! We shall run one together in August – you and I. Provo half – all down hill – you the veteran and me the scared “what the hell was I thinking” beginner. Good times.

Comment by Andrea

You make me laugh! Way to take one (injury) for the accomplishment of the goal (13 miles? whew!). Sorry about your little toe!

Comment by Jen

I lost half a toenail last spring around this time after hiking in bad shoes. It’s no fun! I ended up wearing a bandaid on my toe during most of open-toe shoe season.
