The Good, The Bad, and a Whole Lot of Ugly.

Let’s actually start with the ugly… get the worst of things over first.  (And it may only be a little bit of ugly… but a little ugly condensed into one day makes it exponentially worse.)

  • I ran 8 miles last night as part of my half-marathon training (2.5 weeks!); Ugly.
  • My feet are killing me and I may or may not have a blister on the ball of my foot. Ugly.
  • This morning my legs refuse to work like they’re supposed to; walking is difficult. Ugly.
  • My co-workers keep making fun of me for my gimpy limp, (ugly) jerks.
  • As part of some sick April Fool’s joke, my car was egged yesterday.  Seriously, what did Miss Daisy do to anyone?  She was just sitting there in all her cute yellowness and yesterday morning she was covered in eggs.  So I spent over an hour at the carwash carefully wiping dried egg guts off my car, trying to keep the paint intact. Ugly.
  • I failed at making cookies… I mixed them up like I always do, ate my weight in cookie dough (like I always do), and put the rest of the batch in the oven… and ended up with hard, crunchy, pancake-cookies.  What the?  Since when was I so domestically disabled that I couldn’t successfully make chocolate-chip cookies?  Ugly.

Ok, that’s about as much “ugly” as I can handle for one day…. upgrading to the Bad Stuff.

  • Yesterday, I was had about 5 times for April Fool’s Day… pregnancy scares, faux engagements, moves to Iraq or Nairobi, the whole Gmail time-stamp snafu, a friend coming out, but not really.  It’s good this is only once a year, because I just can’t handle this much Big News in one day more often than that.
  • The snow… someone please explain how Washington D.C. can have flowers and cherry blossoms and kite festivals and I wake up to 4 inches of snow.  Some of which is still on the ground.  Not cool.

And now for the good stuff…it’s always best to focus on the good stuff, right?

  • Due to time-crunch training schedule, and a certain avoidance of all things Chocolate or Cadbury, I have lost almost 15 pounds in a month… this has almost convinced me to sign up for another half-marathon (this one in August, running DOWN a canyon… yes, I know I’m crazy).
  • I have a shiny, yellow car, despite the laborious removal of scrambled eggs.
  • There is still some cookie dough in the fridge.
  • I’d rather be slightly gullible than slightly judgemental… Despite all the good/bad April Fool’s jokes, I felt like I was supportive.  That’s a good feeling.  I’d rather temporarily (and foolishly) support a joke than assume a truth was a fake-out.
  • Yesterday I had the chance to talk to a half-dozen girlfriends that I haven’t talked to in ages.  I met one for lunch, met another for some much-needed Starbux, and yakked the ears off of a couple more.  I always forget how much I love catching up with these girls, and we all made promises to not let 6 months go by without a phone call or email.

Mmmmm… Starbux… if only I had the ability to walk across the street for my super-high-maintenance White Hot Chocolate, Skim Milk, No Whip, One Pump of Peppermint, Extra Hot, With Sprinkles (if you have them -if not, then no thank you).  Perhaps I should start putting rasberry in my drink instead of peppermint… it may encourage the warm weather.  Hey, each person has to do their part, right?

And the real question…did you get fooled yesterday?  Like, REALLY fooled?  Something that people would buy tickets to see?

No fooling me yesterday. Which probably would have been more fun.

Can you at least eat the cookie dough even if you can’t bake them?

You’re right about April Fools jokes and cookie dough. People have to get their priorities straight! I always eat dessert first. I don’t eat dessert often, but if it’s cookie dough…well, let’s just say who cares about what’s for lunch or dinner! In terms of friendship, I always have time for a true friend. These days, too many people behave as if work or stressful things are more important than really important stuff. Nope. You get what you choose in life! Choose well (Am I being sage-like enough?)!

I didn’t get fooled on April Fools Day this year. But I discussed about it much with colleagues, and heard some good ones! People around me just weren’t much into it this year, I guess…

Um…exactly when and where is this 1/2 marathon in August? The way this bum leg is treating me, I may have to postpone my grand May plans.

I got vaguely fooled by a blog post, but that was the extent of it. Definitely not worthy of a ticket purchase.

Also, I FAIL at making cookies too. Every time. They are always flat and crunchy. I have given up. I prefer the dough anyway.

I don’t think I got fooled… but maybe I did? I’m extremely gullible.

Yesterday morning Cole woke me up and told me it had snowed four feet outside and work was cancelled! Woo-hoo! I was soooo thrilled at the thought of a nice sleep-in wrapped in warm comfy blankets! Too bad when I realized it was April Fools AND time to get up. Cruel joke.

Can you please give me some of your willpower? Due to my patheticness at running and my awesomeness at eating junk food, my weight is UP an unspeakable number of pounds at the moment.

Comment by Laurel

Yeah, I got taken in a few times yesterday for April Fools – no egging, though, that sucks!

i saw your gchat away message yesterday, but i am still in shock that someone egged your car. how is THAT an april fool’s joke?

OK… first of all, keep in mind that training for your first distance race is always the hardest and most painful. If you get through this half and sign up for another one, the training will be sooooo much easier because your legs will know what to expect.

Second, as I was reading your post it occurred to me about April Fools, I realized that I was told a really bizarre story yesterday that I totally bought. Unfortunately, it was told to me by someone who always has a very bizarre story, so now I don’t know what to think!

man i don’t think i’d have the stamina to train as hard core as you, that’s so impressive.

and as for april fool’s, luckily no one got me or even tried to get me which might be a first, haha. however everyone in my office received mystery phone calls on their cells at the same time, it was pretty weird.

Pretty boring life here, no great jokes. I’m glad you choose to focus on the good in life–a positive attitude is great (even if it’s something I sometimes struggle with)!

Comment by Lonica

Wow, people must really like to fool you :)

I didn’t get any attempts at all, funnily enough, but if I had… I am the most gullible person I know.

Comment by Allie

Haha…I’m susceptible to pranks and April Fool’s too. Glad to hear you’re able to have a great attitude about it!

I remember this feeling and am soon to re-experience it. My friend and I have signed up for our second half marathon next fall. Yay.

Comment by Lindz

The UGLY: I’m as gimpy as you are!
The BAD: I’m crying just at the thought that after the 1/2-er it’s gonna be so much worse!
The GOOD: The beautiful massage we will be getting right after followed by some serious girl time!

Comment by Uzi

15 pounds in 1 month. That’s incredible! If only I had the willpower.

I was totally taken in by a pregnancy announcement. It was a great prank; my friend’s sister posted a pregnancy announcement on my friend’s blog and then changed her password so that she couldn’t get in to see it.

Your flat cookies: it may be the baking powder you are using – is it old? has it been in your fridge? Or the flour: are you fluffing it before measuring? If not you could be getting up to 1/4 cup per cup too much. Thus the hardness. And no, no April Fools for us. Three year-olds do not appreciate being teased – only teasing.

hey, which race are you contemplating to sign up for? the one downhill…maybe, just maybe i’d consider signing up as well. i didn’t make the cut for the nike sf 1/2 marathon. sigh. i’ll just have to come to sf and partake of yummy food instead of coming to run! =)
