And I promise, I won’t use any more alliteration for the duration of this post.
But, let me just say… leaving cold, snowy, cold, gray, cold Salt Lake City with a quick stop in 60-degree Las Vegas and an end result of 80-degree and sunny Phoenix? It’s pretty much a fail-proof way to have a fantastic weekend. Throw in a BOOKSALE and a whole lotta quality time with the always amazing Handsome V… pretty much that bumps things up to a perfect weekend.
Las Vegas is about the half-way point between Salt Lake City and Phoenix, if you are trying to skip the snowy mountain passes in central Arizona. So, Thursday night Handsome and I found ourselves on the (in)famous Strip, also known as Las Vegas Boulevard. And honestly? I think I really have to be in the mood for Vegas. Sometimes I like the city, the sites, the completely over-the-topness of everything; and sometimes I would much rather take a nap. This trip fell more into the “take a nap” category. We did go watch the Bellagio fountains, and did a little window shopping, and, uh, honestly? That was about it. On the Vegas barometer, we hardly made a blip.
On Friday we finally landed in Phoenix and went straight to dinner at the uber-fantastic Don & Charlie’s, a super-famous steak house in Scottsdale. And frankly, after being in the car for 6 or 7 hours and missing the In ‘n’ Out in Kingman (i.e. Middle of No Where) Arizona, I was very happy for an amazing Filet Mignon and some creme brulee and the cutest date of all time. Seriously? I’m drooling again just thinking about it. (The dinner and the date.)
Saturday was one of those perfect days; you know the ones, right? They happen every so often and when you go back and think about it weeks or months later the memory still makes you smile. That was Saturday. The booksale will have a separate (and GLORIOUS!) post tomorrow, but let me fill you in on the makings of a perfect day.
Firstly, a nap. (After getting up at o-dark-hundred to attend previously mentioned booksale, a nap was essential.) Then some lunchy-lunch, wander around the mall down the street like a couple of teenagers, catch a mid-afternoon matinee (Fool’s Gold – quite entertaining) and meet up with some friends for dinner. Looking at that in a paragraph, it looks like a completely drab day. In actuality? It was the perfect day.
I guess at some point those every day things like ice-cream shakes at an old fashiony soda fountain, holding hands during an evening walk, grocery shopping and picking out videos for Thursday night, laughing at the horrible commercials on TV and taking a Sunday afternoon nap and making waffles for dinner… at some point all those little things add up into something completely unexpected. I think that specialists would agree, this is the definition of happy. Why it has taken me twenty-five years to figure this out, I’m not quite sure…but I’m not questioning, I am simply loving life and still smiling about the Best! Weekend! Ever!

Comment by Leslie 2008 February 12 @ 8:36 amI know what you mean by best weekend, or best day! It’s more about the feel of it than it is the activities. A feeling of contentment mixed with mutual appreciation.
