The other day I was standing in front of my closet, post-shower and still wrapped in a towel; and for the first time, despite about a completely color-coordinated, two-level closet, it occured to me that I have nothing to wear. Seriously? No really. Nothing. If I could leave the house in nothing but a pair of heels and a fabulous trench, I’d be set! I have a large and exciting selection of funky, eclectic, surprising and all-together show-stopping shoes and coats…but because I’m not trying to jump-start a career as a flasher, I need to add an outfit in there somewhere. Granted, I have piles and piles of clothes but they seem completely stale to me! I need someone to look at my closet and pick out new outfits for me; I need someone to rearrange everything and see what new combinations they can come up with. Any volunteers? Any suggestions? Is there a fail-proof method of revamping a closet without spending hundreds of dollars?
Also? I need to figure out what I want for Spring. Yes, it is snowing and there is no possible way a cute flirty skirt, a short-sleeved jacket and peep-toe wedges will make the cut this week, or this month…or even next month. However, I stopped by the mall today and the ONLY thing in any store is short and flirty and filmy and absolutely adorable, but completely inappropriate for 15 degrees and four feet of snow. Remember seeing pictures of celebrities bundled up at Sundance? Yeah, that’s MY town. It’s cold here. And snowy. And silk and chiffon just doesn’t cut it.
And lastly, why is it so difficult to find a kick-ass black, pointy toe heel? I am not complicated, I just want it to be perfect. I want 4″ of height, pointy toes, nice scoop for ultimate toe-cleavage, and preferably an ankle strap so I can run in them. Apparently this shoe is not to be found, at least not in a size 10.
So, this being said; if you happen to have any brilliant ideas on revamping my entire wardrobe, please send them my way. And, most importantly, if you happen to come across any amazing black heels, please send the link a.s.a.p.

Sorry, I have no solutions; I just wanted to commiserate. I was in the mall today and reminded just how much I LOVE shopping (which is why I don’t often let myself go to the mall). I also wondered how it is possible to buy such great pieces but still have nothing to wear. Why is it that the only fashionable, exciting things I have are the two or three items of clothing I bought most recently?
PS: I’m jealous that you have a great coat collection. I’ve just started to realize that coats come in colors besides brown and black. Then again, I’m from San Diego. I didn’t even own a coat until a few years ago!
Comment by Melanie 2008 February 4 @ 8:02 pmI definitely have this problem more often than I’d like. I don’t really have much advice how to solve it except take a nice stroll to Forever 21 for a quick addition to the wardrobe, or Old Navy. Both stores tend to have at least one thing I can buy to give me a new feel instantly…er at least I’d like to think so.
Comment by katelin 2008 February 4 @ 9:43 pmI bought some adorable black-pointy toed at nordstom. I have seem cute ones with an ankle strap too, but not many. Good luck with that search!!
Comment by Hannah 2008 February 4 @ 10:00 pmI have no good ideas at all. I am the same way. But have you checked Piperlime and Zappos for shoes?
Comment by Jess 2008 February 5 @ 7:32 ami have this problem on a daily basis and i’m constantly saying “i have nothing to wear”.

Comment by Michelle & the City 2008 February 5 @ 7:55 amI am a clothes/shoe whore and would have fun going throug your closet with you. Sometimes you can put together an entirely new outfit with just one top that you forgot about or just didn’t think to try on. About the shoes..try zappos.com -I saw some there!
Comment by Princess extraordinaire 2008 February 5 @ 7:55 amEverything I own is black and gray. If I could get away with wearing sweatpants and my “Prepare to Defend Your Chicken” XXL sleep-shirt to work, I would. I stopped wearing heels when I started dating a guy who is the same height as I am. I can only dream of having your problems.
Comment by Lou 2008 February 5 @ 7:58 amLast year, my sister got married and I had to find black shoes to go with my black dress. I needed them to be close-toed and heeled because it was December and we’d be standing outside the SLC temple for freakin’ hours takign pictures and what not. Could I find black shoes anywhere? No I could not. I was shocked at how hard it was. I finally bought some about two days before the wedding that were fine, but still not knock you off your feet awesome.
Comment by Janssen 2008 February 5 @ 8:00 ami wish i could be of some help, but i’m in the same situation. i leave piles of clothes on my bed every day as i run out to work because i just can’t figure out what i can possibly wear. everything is so blah to me.

Comment by Molly 2008 February 5 @ 8:11 amI’m a size 10 too. Why are all the good shoes in the 6 to 8 range?
Comment by Leslie 2008 February 5 @ 9:28 amI was going to suggest Zappos, too. Or Overstocks.com And since I am of the old fuddy duddy variety of dresser, I just want some black flats that don’t make me want to vomit.
The closet will probably look better when winter is over; I think it’s just late winter ennui, and not your actual wardrobe (i am also a coat and shoe whore).
Comment by Gwen 2008 February 5 @ 10:33 amI love shoes and thought I’d offer a few suggestions!
These are the best shoes I’ve ever owned and they actually run big – so a 9.5 could work for you! I’m a 6 and had to get a 5.5.

Comment by Laurie 2008 February 5 @ 11:47 amI agree. I am so tired of wearing winter clothes (or at least the winter clothes I have in my closets). Right now I’m currently all about the layers because that seems to vary things a bit. Good luck with the shoes…
Comment by Lonica 2008 February 5 @ 3:01 pmScarves in different shapes, colours and materials is the perfect answer!
Jewellery too, well most accessories I suppose.
I volunteer to come and revamp your closet, send me a ticket or beam me there…;)
Myself I’ve no problem what to wear, my problem is when to wear all those lovely garments I haven’t been able to resist getting, ah things will have to change. Preferably soon…:/
Comment by Pia 2008 February 5 @ 3:20 pmI’ve got my eyes out for a new cute spring dress. It’s still the dead of winter here! What the crap??
I saw some cute stuff in the window of Anthropologie this morning. And I always love Ann Taylor Loft. But you might be too young for that look.
Comment by Isabel 2008 February 5 @ 4:23 pmI have that problem all the time, even right after I buy new clothes, because I almost immediately wear them all to death and need some variety. I do the same thing with groceries–I can buy out the entire grocery store, but once I get those groceries home, I am at a loss for what to eat for dinner, because they just don’t look as appetizing on my own shelves as on the store’s.
Comment by Caryn 2008 February 5 @ 9:44 pmIsabel- is she crazy? I think A.t.l. is fabulous for people our age!
But anyway, what about a clothing swap with friends? You pull out things you don’t want, your friends pull out things they don’t want and you have a little party of exchanging them all.
The only trick is that you have to have friends that are relatively close to your size. My sister and I loan clothes all the time. You might have a skirt that has a pattern or something so you can only wear it once in a while so you trade that kind of stuff. It is great except I can never get her pants because I am at least five inches taller than her.
Comment by Stephanie 2008 February 6 @ 5:16 amSounds like you need to hunker down for a fashion show day some cold weekend day… or else just get that outfit-creating computer that Cher had in Clueless. I still want that thing!
As for shoes, I got a great (and comfortable) pair of Arturo Chiang black heels last year. Although my style isn’t available anymore, I was impressed with the brand–they’re basic black pumps but have spectator detailing and a non-trashy-looking corset lace up the back.
Comment by Laurel 2008 February 6 @ 5:51 pmOoo, I love to coordinate outfits. If you weren’t halfway across the country, I’d volunteer my opinions. Hmm, as for black pointy toe shoes (we’re the same size), I’m a huge fan of Carlos Santana. I don’t know if he’ll have what you’re looking for but you should check him out – you will fall in love.
