Last week was, in general, a really bad week for me. In addition to losing my dear Granny, I had several other events that added to the Worst. Monday. Ever. This may explain my absolute lack of blogging about anything current. At any rate, I am now ready to talk about one of the offending institutions; the University of Utah. I have been trying to graduate for years; a class here, a class there, paying through the nose for tuition and books, hoping that sometime in this decade I would get the little piece of paper that says “You Did It…Now Spend the Next 10 Years Paying Off Your Loans.” I want that piece of paper. I want the satisfaction of graduating. I want to be able to say I have a B.S. degree.
This fall I decided to go back to school, full force, and just get this thing done. I dropped my double major, I dropped my minor, and was encouraged to see I only had 9 classes left. Nine! That is three semesters of night school, three classes at a time. Totally manageable. I had dreams of graduating by next Christmas, of walking out of Kingsbury Hall in the snow, dressed in unflattering drape with a pointy, fugly cap.
Apparently, the stars have aligned to thwart that particular dream. I found out last Monday that the U (all locals call the University of Utah “The U” and Brigham Young University “The Y” –and these fine, educational establishments have a coinciding mountain tattoo proclaiming this moniker) has booted me from their system. They think I’m riff-raff and have dropped all my classes for the winter semester. Now, before you get all huffy thinking that I have bad grades or a bad attitude or something, let me finish the story. I have not taken a class at the U for 12 months, and apparently the NEW policy is that individuals in that situation are dropped from the Registrar’s master list. Meaning I have to reapply like a 17-year old. And I won’t be able to apply in time to register for classes for this semester, which means I can’t start school again until the summer, which means I won’t graduate until May 2009. All of which is alright, except for the fact that in November when I went to talk to my counselor about starting up classes again she didn’t mention any of this. If she had I would be sitting in class tonight, devouring information on the current economic situation(s) of South East Asia. As it is, I will be reorganizing my desk and my closet, which does nothing for my graduation time-line.
So, as life sits now, I am waiting for my re-registration paperwork to go through, and crossing my fingers, toes, and any other bendable body parts that the classes I need will be offered during the summer semester and my goal of graduating in December 2008 May 2009 will come to fruition. (See that? The word “fruition”? Fancy-pants word for a would-be college graduate, the U should totally reconsider… sigh, soon enough, right?)

Yuck! What a disaster. I hate it when things like that happen. Good luck!
Comment by Janssen 2008 January 15 @ 10:25 amWhat a pain in the butt!!! I have to say, sometimes going to a small, liberal arts college felt stifling (a lot of the time, actually), but they did hold our hands on this kind of stuff.
I hope you can get it figured out soon. Especially because I’m going to have to start studying econ again soon and I’m gonna need some help!
Comment by L Sass 2008 January 15 @ 10:57 amUgh, I’m sorry to hear that. That’s a stupid policy. Seriously. If you’ve already been accepted once, why would you have to go through it again? Most people get wiser as they get older.
Comment by Marriage-101 2008 January 15 @ 10:58 amUgh, what a stupid rule. It assumes that every college student is in it for consecutive years, which is just not the case!
Comment by RA 2008 January 15 @ 11:19 amThis sucks! What a nightmare. I’m sorry about the whole situation, and about your grandmother.
Comment by Jess 2008 January 15 @ 12:23 pmOh man that’s horrible. I hope it works out for you! Fingers (and other bendable body parts) crossed
Comment by Katelin 2008 January 15 @ 12:32 pmOh that would make me so angry!
My fingers are crossed that the courses you need will be available when you need them!
Comment by Nic 2008 January 15 @ 12:48 pmSorry to hear about your granny.
Now the university crap would make me angry beyond belief. What can you do? Still I have no idea how you can blog so calmly about it. I think I would’ve thrown my laptop out the window.
Big hug
xoxoxo
Comment by Holly Golighty 2008 January 15 @ 1:39 pmStudying South East Asia sounds so appealing right now: no job, riding carefree in a rickshaw, eating rice for dinner… Now suddenly, there is no class, the plug is pulled…yuck! Sorry about the bummer delay, educational institutions are so cold, and boring!
Comment by Jen 2008 January 15 @ 2:18 pmI can see having a rule like that… but I CANNOT see your counselor not mentioning it!! What a loser. My program made you fill out a form to request to keep your student status if you were going to be gone for more than 12 months. Not reapply completely! Ugh. Good luck!
Comment by Operation Pink Herring 2008 January 15 @ 2:26 pmThat sucks
Good luck with working it all out…
Comment by autobiographyofmyfeet 2008 January 15 @ 4:43 pmNow I can’t write sucks since that seem to be the “it” word for this -but I concur! And what a majorly lousy job that “counselor” did…:(
But I’m sure, there’s probably some silverlining to be found even here, maybe there’ll be some other really amazing class you can take that’s not on offer now, or something like that!
Comment by Pia K 2008 January 15 @ 5:09 pmWelcome to your new digs!
Comment by Nic 2008 January 15 @ 10:18 pmWow that sucks! I would be really pissed off! Hope you can work it all out and get your degree soon!
Comment by Viviane 2008 January 16 @ 8:17 amI really admire you. It’s so hard to work full time and go to school. Your effort is so worth it. Don’t let ridiculous red tape get in your way.
Comment by Lou 2008 January 16 @ 11:10 amwell I for one, think this is great. It works perfectly with my plan for you to move up here. UW (We couldn’t settle for one initial), or University of Washington, would take you in an instant. And the Vampire is already FROM here!
