A Fashion Poll: Peep-Toe Shoes & Tights
2007 November 29, 10:25 pm

I have come across a semi-serious fashion dilemma, ok, not so much “dilemma”, but “conundrum” perhaps. If you have flipped through Vogue, or InStyle, or the latest J Crew catalog you have definitely seen the opaque tights with colorful skirts and dresses look. There is the classic black tights, or the more shocking yellow, purple or blue tights with mini-dresses, pencil skirts or mid-length sweater dresses.

I have decided to try and rock this look, and in my opinion, totally made it happen yesterday. Picture, if you will, a black knit dress, gray sweater/jacket, hot pink (magenta, even) tights and black velvet-suede with snakeskin ankle-strap heels (I heart Coach! Even more when it’s on Sale!). Cute. Funky. Hot Pink. This fabulous pair of legwear actually earned me my nickname at work; Sassypants. (Laurel, they aren’t nearly as sassy as your pants, I promise! Can we still be friends?) This moniker became even more hilarious when a co-worker of mine called my roommate’s office for a routine check-up on their systems; when my roomie mentioned I started working there this week, the guy immediately responded with “Oh! Pink Tights! Yeah, I know her; we call her Sassypants!” I’m totally serious, that actually happened today. For real. Happy Birthday Wench, mock me and my girly tights to your heart’s content.

At any rate, I now have a question about opaque tights and peep-toe shoes; so please humor me for a minute. (And please ignore the uber-dusty floor, this is taken in the loft, we just put up the Christmas tree, and it made a big mess… but I’m not so worried about it that I wanted to sweep before I took this pic. Again, please ignore the dust.)

Black and white thin-striped v-neck tissue T

Chunky black sweater with large-ish buttons
Tealish-blue satin flippy-skirt
Charcoal-gray opaque tights
Black peep-toe heels with ankle strap…

Can I wear opaque tights with peep-toe, open-heeled shoes? Does that say “winter chic”? Or is it something closer to “you’re CrAzY!” Please advise. (And please ignore my not-stick-figure ankles. I hate my ankles. If there was surgery to decrease the size of my ankles I would totally sign up. However, the only way to do that is to chop the Achilles tendon in half, and as much as I despise my ankles, I’d rather be able to walk properly. And really, what would I do with my shoes?)

my opinion is no tights or nylons with peep toes. ever.

Comment by Steph

I am with Steph above. I feel that is an unspoken rule. It is like seeing the seam of someone’s pantyhose when they are wearing strappy heels.

I think you look hot, and I don’t mind the peeps plus tights. It looks v wintery and stylish to me!

I second Steph on this one, but my opinion is sort of moot in that I am pretty much anti-tights in general. Nude, if I must. But hey – compared to the sassy pants, this look is much more tame, so I am a big shrug to this one.

Comment by RA

I have to side with everyone else too – I just can’t stomach open toed shoes with tights/nylons/pantyhose. A little too scary for me.

Comment by Janssen

I like opaque tights and peep toes, but not together. It’s just too much.

Comment by Jess

I think the peep in the toes are small enough to get away with tights. If they were bigger peep toes, then no.

Comment by Lacey Bean

I want to see a picture of your sassypants ‘do. Please?

Comment by Miss Erika

I think opaque tights and peep toes are very fashion forward and I rock that look from time to time. And you should listen to me more than your other commenters because… I am also a sassy pants.

But seriously, I think the tights look great and you see it all the time in nyc.

Comment by L Sass

Usually, I’d be a no on this question, but your inclusion of pictures is most helpful….that’s a pretty tiny “peep” and so the offending seam probably can’t sneak out.

That said, though, I can’t imagine you don’t have a closed-toed pair of sexy heals in that closet of yours??? And if not, might this be the time for a shopping trip???

Comment by Trish Ryan

yeah i’m with everyone else, closed toe all the way.

hott skirt though :)

Comment by Michelle

i want to see the sassy pants like Erika!

Oh, I think you look absolutely fabulous! That is a killer skirt!

Comment by Cousin Jen

Trends change. Hosiery with peep-toe shoes is definitely acceptable now.

Your outfit here — so pretty!

Should post a pic in the outfit with pink tights, too.

I recently did this…even though it killed The King. I think you can do anything, as long as you are comfortable and you are owning it. Just go for it.

(Also…today I am wearing tights, boots and a mini. The tights allow me to wear a short skirt…if you catch my drift.)

(The King LOVES this look.)

Comment by Isabel

I think it’s NOW a do. And it better be because I just did it last Sunday. :)

Comment by Mona

i’m no fashion connossieur but it’s like wearing socks w/ birkenstocks. not so much a good idea. cute cute cute skirt girl!

Comment by Erica

Since I practically live in jeans everyday, I’m not really the one to ask. But in my very much non-expert opinion, I think they look just fine.

Comment by Angela

Oh honey, YOU LOOK HOT! If they are winter shoes with a little “peep” it’s totally fashionable and it works with style. If you are trying to pull the look from a catolog by what you have in your closet and the only open toed shoes you have are from summer 2006, then absolutely not.
The rule is, if you can see less than 2 toe’s, you can wear tights. TIGHTS ladies, not nylons, that’s just a no-no all together.

Comment by UZI

My opinion – no good. I commend you for the risk – but perhaps it is one not taken again eh? ;) I feel if there are any sort of nylon or tight involved, the shoes for consideration shold not display any toes…at all…ever. :)

Comment by AndreaJolene

As much as I love peep toe shoes, I’m going with no on this one. It just defeats the purpose of peep toe if your toe is covered in meshy tight material. You can get toe-less tights/pantyhose though. so I think that would be okay.

Comment by Marriage-101

I agree with the majority. No peep toes with tights. But I will say, thank you for dressing season appropriate. A few girls came to church today in sandals. I thought, “I wonder if they noticed the SNOW outside?” That is about the tackiest faux paux ever. Like a thick scarf in summer. In any case, I’ve seen lots of people do this and I don’t judge them

Comment by HRH

It works this season, but you need more colour balance. The black cardi is a bit heavy for the skirt. If you can find a cardigan to match the tights then you’re on to a winner.

Comment by jessamyn

What you wear is only what you wore. So if you wore it, the it had to be correct or it would not have been possible. All possibities have merit. So wearing tight and open toe shoes is a valid preconception. And guys think it is HOT!
