Once upon a time, a gorgeous girl named Elithe fell in love with the gregarious high school football star, Bill. After they graduated they got married, and Bill enlisted in the Marines. For several years they moved around the country, wrote love letters while he was overseas, and Elithe began to raise their children. Over several generations their starter family exploded into an enormous family tree, one leaf being the “heidikins” leaf. My grandparents have left a legacy that includes 10 children and their spouses; 54 grandkids – many of whom are married and have started families of their own; there are dozens of great-grand kids and by my “unofficial” estimates my grandparents are the head of a family 130 people strong… with another dozen on the way. Amazing.

My grandpa’s birthday is on the 4th of July, so every summer for as long as I can remember we have had a biggish family party. However, this week is promising to be the largest get-together ever. We have rented out a canyon, have enough food for an army, and for the next two days I will be shuffling back and forth between work, reunion and the play. It will be busy – but I’m actually really excited about it. I have counsins coming in from New York, Georgia, California, New Mexico, Hawaii and one is coming from some sweet little beach town in Mexico (hello, must get to be better friends with that cousin!)

Hope you have a Happy 4th of July!

Sheesh, and I thought my family was big. That’s a heck of an achievement, raising ten kids.
