Chateau Montelena
At the very north end of Napa valley, at the base of Mt. Helena, is a castle-like winery that I found on a map and decided I simply had to visit. We finally found it and I was not disappointed… it really was a castle! And it almost had a moat…ok, it was really a biggish pond full of ducks and turtles and little fishes… but close enough! Adam & I wandered around the grounds and gardens for a while, and I kept thinking how fantastic it would have been to grow up in a real-life American castle… with a pet swan. Yes, it would have been awesome. I decided to be content with wandering around and throwing bits of bread to the ducks and fish. And even though I realize that is something that 6-year olds do at the park (I know, because when I was 6 I’d beg my mom to take me to the park so I could throw bread to the ducks) at any rate, it was fun!
The Chateau Montelena has a fairly large pond with an island in the middle and a Japanese-style bridge and pagoda. And on the bridge is a little bucket of bread that you can tear (ok, pound) into pieces. It was great. And after about a half hour there were a ton of little fishies, and a bunch of ducks, and even a couple of turtles coming over for some lunch.
