Filed under: There and Back Again
Famous for being a ritzy “small town”, Carmel-by-the-Sea is practically a village, with windy roads nearly overgrown in trees that almost completely hide the vacation cottages and small gardens. The main road down to the beach has several high end, luxury shops, coffee houses, small inns and specialty stores. It was adorable! Granted, I saw practically the entire Spring ad campaigns from Vogue on the wealthy pedestrians – but even that was kind of a kick for me. The beach in Carmel is a very fine, powdery sand that makes you want to just curl up and take a nap. Pebble Beach golf course is less than a mile away, with the green going all the way to the rocky cliffs that drop into the surf. It was truly incredible. There is a short drive past the golf course called 17-mile drive (even though it’s only about 9 miles) – it costs $10 or so and we opted to take Highway 1 instead. At first glance, I thought Carmel was a snooty little hideaway – but after spending an hour on the beach I began to wish I had a little cottage tucked up among the trees; this place is gorgeous!

Comment by Andrea Jolene 2007 April 17 @ 3:14 pmI’m so jealous of your part-time Cali life. You have the beautiful mountains of the West and the awesome SF Bay area. Do you know how amazing that is?!?! Makes me want to move back home so much.
