Of course you know the saying “Always a Bridesmaid, Never a Bride” that is usually tsk tsk’ed by ladies of an older generation as a kind of warning to perpetual bridesmaids… firstly, this ancient saying makes NO SENSE whatsoever!! A) Being a habitual bridesmaid obviously means you have a lot of friends. B) You collect quite a few pairs of fantastic dress-up shoes. C) You definitely get cake. And D) Weddings are great places to meet people (i.e. single men who have just married off their previously-bachelor buddy, they’re lookin’ for something!)
That being said, a dear friend of mine called me yestereday to ask if I would be one of her bridesmaids and not only am I flattered, but incredibly honored. Weddings are major mile posts in our lives, and I am so touched to be a part of the happiness. I don’t really need more shoes (although chances are likely that I will purchase some anyway), I don’t really need more cake (again, I’ll have some anyway), and I’m not attending to find a suitable match. But the more I think about it, the more excited I am! When my brothers and sister got married, I was a bridesmaid – but they don’t really count because you’re automatically “in” for your siblings nuptials. (And in this Great State, most brides-to-be have so many siblings there are very few other members of the wedding party.) A few years ago I acted the part of “Maid of Honor” for my best-friend-since-4th-grade, and I still think of it as one of the great events of our friendship. I really am quite excited to celebrate and enjoy Vanessa and Cole’s big day (Love you both!).
And as a considerably less signficant footnote: I have been promised that I won’t have to wear anything horrible, which of course, is just good taste.

Congrats…weddings are awesome!
I was only a bridesmaid the one time. And I admit that I failed at it. Why? Because I suck.
I’m sure you’ll do a much better job.
Comment by Isabel 2007 April 9 @ 12:13 pmThat’s fantastic! I would LOVE to be a bridesmaid again, I’ve only been one once (for a cousin’s wedding) and it’s just not the same.
How exciting! Weddings are fun!
Comment by alyndabear 2007 April 9 @ 4:08 pmThat’s awesome! I’ve only been asked once – and then I couldn’t find the time to try on the dress so I was unasked
. Most of my close friends are guys – so that doesn’t help either. When (that’s right when) I get married I will have a total of two bridesmaids – Ashlee (bff since 2nd grade) and Nikelle. That is all.
I don’t like big to-do’s…or I-do’s for that matter.
Comment by Andrea Jolene 2007 April 9 @ 4:34 pmI’ve been a bridesmaid 4 times now and I have quite a few good friends to go still…this summer’s wedding will be #5. I love being there for my friends and I consider it to be such an honor. I’m so happy that you are going to be a bridesmaid for your friend!! Speaking of which…I bought ANOTHER dress on Saturday that I haven’t posted about yet. Lets play dress-up on Thursday.
