Yesterday afternoon Erika & Kevin took us to the Catholic Basilica in St. Louis. This cathedral is the largest in the Midwest, and has the most gorgeous mosaics I’ve ever seen. Begun in 1907 and completed in the late 1980′s the interior of this church (pics to come soon) is absolutely breathtaking. The mosaics took 20 artists over 80 years to complete, and they were done with over 8,000 different colors of glass. I wish I could explain the sense of awe and wonder I felt as I stared up at the domes of this church and thought about how many hours were spent in completing this huge project. In my Art History classes we would study the various mosaics and cathedrals of Europe, and this cathedral in St. Louis reminded me of pictures of seen of San Ravenna in Italy. Berkley told me that there are gorgeous churches full of stained glass windows and stunning mosaics on nearly every corner in Italy – and I can hardly explain my travel-envy! I think I probably took 30 pictures of the inside of the St. Louis Basilica and hardly captured 1/20th of the meticulous artwork covering the walls & ceilings.
