Something Wicked This Way Comes: So much happened before Dorothy came along. WICKED is the musical tale of the two powerful players in Oz; Glinda the Good Witch of the North, and Elphaba the Wicked Witch of the West. Surprisingly, these two were best friends and roomates in college!! If you have not heard of WICKED you need to get out from under that rock; if you haven’t heard the music you need to get thee hence and find it; and if you haven’t seen it I highly suggest making a trip. This story is hilarious, witty & has some incredible music. I now am the proud owner of the official WICKED hoodie, and official green sunglasses from Oz. King Tut’s Tomb: The King Tut exhibit opened in Chicago at the Field Museum i
n late May and has attracted millions of visitors so far. Ever since I was a little girl I have been fascinated with Egypt and pyramids and the various gods & goddesses that protect them. So when I heard the exhibit was going to be in Chicago I immediately started checking into flights and other attractions. The exhibit itself had artifacts from King Tut’s tomb as well as other ancient Egyptian pieces including furniture, sculpture, household items, weapons and armor. The whole thing was amazing – particularly for a history buff / nerd like me. For more info on the exhibit visit www.nationalgeographic.com/tut.
It’s A Bird! It’s A Plane! It’s A Giant, Silver Jellybean!!
“The Jellybean,” a sculpture by Anish Kapoor, is officially called Cloud Gate and lives in Millennium Park on Michigan Avenue. This enormous, amoeba-shaped sculpture reflects the skyline of the surrounding buildings as well as anyone curious enough to wander nearby (or underneath). This was by far one of my favorite places to spend the day people-watching. And really, what city isn’t complete without a 3 story, chrome-plated jellybean? Salt Lake should seriously think about this!! For more pictures please visit: www.millenniumpark.org/newsandmedia/cloud_gate.html.
The Chicago Art Institute: Both a school and a museum the Institute houses one of the largest collections of art in the United States, rivaled only by the Met in New York. Because I am an Art History fanatic (nerdiness coming out again – please forgive me) I spent hours and hours wandering around the building and its various annexes. I did have to keep on the move more than I would have liked as there was a creepy, balding man with glasses and a purple sweater that kept following me. If I went to the Impressionists wing, he was there. Modern art, there he was again. Armor room? Yep. He even followed me to the Native American wing and I finally lost him somewhere in the ancient Chinese pottery exhibit. Creepy!
